Incoming. First timer
Been wanting to add something to my one watch collection (DJ41) for a while but didn't want a Rolex. I decided I wanted a Panerai although I have a very small wrist (6.25" at the biggest). I had tried on my uncle's Panerai a few years ago but didn't like that case (000 or 111 or 112 cant remember). I was just about to write Panerai off as not being for me when I stopped by a local AD last weekend and tried on the 42mm submersible. I really liked it but the strap was too big. I was pretty sure I was going to buy the submersible so I ordered the XS strap myself so when it came in I could go buy the submersible the same day. I spent the next week researching Panerai and looking to see if there were any other models that I'd like more than the submersible. My DJ is fairly flashy and I wanted something durable and rugged. I was looking for a true do anything watch that I never have to think about or worry if it gets scratched or beat up. The submersible was the obvious choice. However, I stumbled upon an Instagram user named @Azcii with a beautiful Pam 995. I saw the MSRP is a bit more expense than the 42mm submersible and decided against spending that much. I go to an AD this morning with a large Panerai display (not the original AD where I tried on the submersible) to see if they might have other models that I could try. Not only did they have a 42mm submersible, but they also had a 995 sitting in the case waiting to be sold. I loved the 995 even more in person than I did in pictures. I had the AD put my OEM XS strap on the submersible and I tried it on. It fit great and felt even better. I then tried on the 995 and didn't feel comfortable at all. The AD then put my OEM XS submersible strap on the 995 just so I could get a feel for what the 995 feels like with the OEM strap and I still didn't feel comfortable even though I thought the 995 was a more striking watch. I decided to go with the 42mm submersible (back at the original AD) and I'm very happy with my decision.
I've heard people are unimpressed with the movement in the 42mm submersible but I don't care too much about that. As long as it works I'm happy. I also have an 8 year warranty and I suspect I'll be trading in the 42mm submersible for the 47mm submersible in the future (the owner of the AD told me he'll happily buy my 42mm back and give me a good deal on the 47mm when the time comes). On to the pictures: For reference, here is the 47mm submersible on my 42mm XS strap: And here are some of the 995: |

Nice Submersible. Tried one on a while back pre covid when you go get to the stores. Am still undecided on wether to go 42mm or 47mm. Either 683, 1389 or 793. Funny you mention you have small wrists and went with the 42mm but will trade up to the 47mm? Why do you think you will trade to the 47mm? Why did you not just get the 47mm straight away?
Have been looking at photos I took and not sure if as a daily wearer the 47mm will just be to big. |

Great choice. 42 looks perfect, thats why they make it. I have a blend of Rolex and Panerai and think make an excellent blended collection. Wnjoy.

Well long story short, I returned the 683 this morning. Although I really like the look of the watch, I don't like the movement inside of it and I regretted not getting the larger 47mm 1389 submersible. My AD let me return the 683 and instead buy the 1389! It's currently too big for me to wear (the strap is huge but it fits fine when on the 42mm XS strap) so the OEM XS rubber will be delivered on Wednesday. I will update with wrist shots then but for the time being here are some pictures:
And this is it on the 42mm XS strap: |

Anyway, the 1389 looks like a giant on your wrist. As long as you are comfortable with it, that’s all that matters.

Congrats, the 47mm is a typical Panerai size, so if it wears big it's just part of the Panerai heritage. Looks great. Enjoy it.

I love it! So glad I got the 47mm. I'm actually thinking about selling the Rolex and buying a second Panerai. Between hating the Rolex hype and loving the Panerai community, its a very real possibility that I'll be adding a second Panerai soon.
Regardless, some pictures. I have a few straps already from some great makers including Yusk, Vintager, DiStefano, and my current favorite (far and away) Cordes: |
