Please advise: I recently bought a handsome DJ41, two years old, and I noticed that it switches date at 11-12 minutes past midnight. All my other Rolexes snap the date within the first five minutes. Otherwise it runs within superlative spec, closer to -2s/day.

Should I send it in for warranty service? Also these days who knows what the service centers are up to and how long I will be without it...

It’s normal for it to not click to the next date exactly at midnight. Seeing as the watch is keeping great time there is no need to send it in.

No need to take it for service yet, servicing could even make it develop another fault.
The watch is absolutely in good shape.

Thank you! I was already leaning against sending it in. At least I have noticed that it is consistent when it switches so there does not seem to be anything wrong with it, other than triggering some OCD - I once sent in a Batman whose bezel was 1/3 minute off :)

The date can only change when the hour hand has made two complete 12 hour turns around the dial, its how the hands are assembled on the hand stack.Some change a little before some after midnight all normal but looks like your hands need adjusting but myself would leave it to next service..

As Peter has explained.

But I think it should be closed than 11 - 12 minutes.

Leave it until first service and I’m sure the hands will be reset closer to your expectations.

I would not sent it in just for this adjustment.

I’m as obsessive as anybody. But a +\- 10 minute date change window never bothered me.

Is there some official guidance on this? Meaning some link or something from Rolex? Kind of like we know what COSC and superlative chronometer specifically means?

Wow. Of my eight Rolexes with the date function, only two are within that three minute range. Something wrong with quality control ?
Does not, however, bother me in the slightest IRL.

My DJ41 changes between 12:07 and 12:08 since I got it last April. I thought it would change exactly at 12:00 a.m.. No big deal for me at least it's consistent...

My 1976 DJ, service history unknown. Changes at around 2359 and a bit, just about bang on 0000.

Will try to watch it tonight when it changes and report back.

Would you have to wait until midnight or could you just advance the minute hand slowly past midnight and see what minute it changes on? Real question.

Good point. Although I happen to be awake, so thought I would watch it change in real time. Sadly I was side tracked at the crucial time and only checked around 0004

PLEASE don’t send in this perfectly normal DJ 41. Imagine you get it back with a couple more hairline scratches on the case or bracelet than you’d like to see. You’d be trading a problem many don’t see (unless you’re often up at midnight) for one or more you could see every day. Just enjoy!! :)

It's interesting that we want our watch to be some precise instrument, but we miss the big picture.

The earth is 24,000 miles around, so each 1000 miles represents an hour. When we stand on different time zone markers, we are actually a minute off for every 16.6 miles either east or west of that spot.

If your watch changes at 11 minutes after 12, just go 180 miles west and it should work out fine.

Somehow I have been working past midnight lately. That's how I know that an hour ago it flipped at 12:12 am.

No, I don't think I will send it. It's become my most worn Rolex under this lockdown. So comfy. Blue dial, batons, oyster bracelet.

If it's consistently changing at 12:12 it means it's just the hand alignment that's a bit off. If that is the case I would leave it until it's time for service or any other intervention.
