I hear ya. It was my daily for 7 months after I acquired it. Just got a little nervy lately since I recently lost my AD and have just watched prices continue to climb.

Also, all this talk around pieces being centred around investment and value retention is making me feel like it's no longer about the enjoyment or passion for a piece these days, and that they're just commodities or stocks meant to be exploited for profit.

Agree with this. I purposely look for stuff that is good value. E.g. I recently bought a full WG Daytona for the price of a nearly new ceramic. As much as I like the ceramic, at a similar price it was a no brainier to go PM for me.

If you can't wear it without that sort of fear, sell it.

If we look at relative wealth increase, maybe the price premium for PP Nautilus as well as AP and Rolex, actually in a weird and unprecedented sort of way justified. Think about it. There are a lot more rich people ( millionaires ) nowadays then say a decade or two ago. I don't have the exact statistic but I will venture to say it has easily double or triple? Especially with the rise of China.

So with increased wealth, people are looking for ways to spend their money. Demand for luxury items especially when they are limited are bound to go up. And when it's luxury items that appears to hold value, people rush into it. The bubble will "burst" only if there is a major correction of the global economy.

i would say you are mostly correct. Its less there are more wealthy people because its easier to make money its that the gap between the richest and the middle class is getting wider. So you are just concentrating more money at the top end. The high earners just end up with even more disposable income than they use to have

I suppose if your already pricey watch doubles in value that should give you pause, I can say it hasn't for me surprisingly, I'm pretty cool about it and I'm not like this with stocks at all, even had to have some executional be-a-robot therapy once, but I see this still as a hobby and even if prices did crater I don't think that would impact on my decision making as the exorbitant rise hasn't so far.

Actually, you and Ben are both correct.

Ben is right-- there are definitely more millionaires today than let's say 15 years ago......thanks in large part to the tech industry.

However, you're also right that the wealth disparity continues to grow with even greater concentration of wealth among the uber elite/wealthy.

I consider my Nautilus as straight-line depreciating assets, not investments. I wear the hell out of them because every time i wear them, I got value out of them.

I don’t consider any of my watches as assets of any kind.

Once the money is spent, it’s gone. It’s not on a balance sheet

The only time the value comes back into play is if I’m debating moving it for another watch. But the initial “investment”, once it’s gone, it’s gone.

true, but the insurance gap is real. Might not be an "asset" in that sense, but its a big financial hit if you lose it as far as the over retail part if you plan on replacing it.

You can try to get it insured at market price and many do. Im skeptical the vast majority of loses pay out at market prices as you really do need special insurance for that almost all of the time. So as far as im concerned im wearing a 5990 at retail that is insured at retail + an uninsured DD all in one. I wouldn't walk out of the house with a DD not insured, but thats in effect what we are doing wearing a lot of these watches.

I still wear them though. Hard to not think of it as an asset in that situation as you can't replace it with insurance money, so it becomes a much bigger deal and then you stop thinking of it as a watch.

your words, I know, are correct.

I just don't really see it that way. I walked around from Friday to yesterday with my new DD40 on, no insurance. Would I bring it with me on a vacation? I am not sure, but likely not.

I do not insure my watches under 10k. maybe I move through them too fast to worry about it. In fact, I have two AP's right now with no insurance on them. I plan to keep them both, but I will not add them to my policy.

I would surely be upset if i lost them, or even one of my insured watches. but at that point, it is just a material item. i would get over it.

i insure my two patek's and the new DD because if they got lost, I would want some compensation to buy something else, as a replacement. i doubt highly i would buy the same thing.

i realize my thought process is skewed. but once i make the decision to spend the money, that money is no longer part of the equation. its like a fart in the wind.

yeah
i have already decided if i lose an over retail watch, its gone. Ill get something else. It will suck, but at least my cash outlay will be covered. So im whole in a sense. Technically i didn't lose money

It would suck if you were 100% in need of getting the same watch back.

If anyone is concerned in wearing their wristwatch, they should just sell it. Why pay so much to increase a burden on your life?

Just my 2 cents.

It’s funny because it seemed to be the least desired nautilus prior to it being discontinued. Just goes to show it’s about the hype more than anything else.

What's even more odd is that people (sellers) seem to think both the bracelet and strap variants would appreciate. Why would that be? Only the bracelet version was discontinued.

Least desired nautilus on this forum, most desired timepiece in my collection LOL. No hype, just pure love for watches.

Least Desired by keyboard warriors who can't effort it, one of the rarest and most desired in real life (bracelet version, specially grey), achieving higher prices than "grail" 5712/1a.
If blue one comes out, grey and white become the rare discontinued ones.

Here are Auction result BEFORE the Discontinued rumor/announcement SAME auction, 29 may 2018.
5712/1a plunging Below it's estimate selling for 40'000 USD
https://www.phillips.com/detail/PATE...2&searchPage=1
5726/1a soaring 35 percent (!) above highest estimate, selling for about 60'000 USD https://www.phillips.com/detail/PATE...6&searchPage=1
