Thoughts on a 1980 Pepsi GMT Master please
I’m just starting to look around for a 1980 ish GMT Pepsi so late 1675 or early 16750 I suppose.
Would love to hear thoughts on the below watch - I would want something pretty authentic but I would be wearing it so “safe queen” not necessary! https://www.chrono24.com/rolex/vinta...id11476505.htm |

Good lord, that ain't pretty. Dial discoloration is a huge turn-off, not to mention the newer, mismatched hands. Possible that moisture got to the tritium. I'd keep looking.

I've never liked the tritium that turns black like that-- the best examples seem to fade into a deep yellow. The black is some other sort of corrosion. And yes, the hands! Watch out when shopping there's a lot of "weird" stuff that people price high with the idea that it's a unique example and really they are just messed up.

If you are going to wear it, and don't mind something a couple years later-- where you get a gloss dial with gold surrounds on the markers, you can save a few thousand, maybe upto $5k. The earliest GMT dials (non date dial, matte, no gold surround) really command a premium. Back in the day, the gloss with gold surround was considered a premium, but not so much now! You can find aged tritium in both examples.

Sure, I'd probably prefer a matte dial, but the matte dials in great condition are/were significantly more. I do get compliments from WIS about the condition of mine. For a 35 year old watch it looks amazing and still very much scratches the vintage watch itch. |

Hard pass, good full sets are north of 16/17k these days and more if exceptional.
