The Salmon 1601

Hello everybody,

This is my first post on this forum with hopefully many more to come since there seems to be such a great amount of knowledge and resources which this forum has to offer. In the past I have collected vintage IWC, Omega, Zodiac, Universal Geneve and sparsely Rolex. However, I am looking to extend that facet of my collection.

My question was regarding the salmon-dial variants of the 1601. I have been searching for one of these for over a year now and have come very close to buying a few. However, upon closer inspection of quite a few candidates, I have believed many dials to be either refurbished or actual redials. This included one which bulangandsons had for sale.

Can anyone actually confirm or deny that the 1601 datejust was manufactured with a salmon dial (ideally pie pan, not Buckley) from the factory? Otherwise, are there salmon dials which are original to other models? 1603, 16013/14?

Much appreciated,

Matthew Y

To my knowledge there were no factory 16XX salmon dials. First I remember were on Lady DJs and I have no idea if they were factory or not. Obviously, others may have more information than I. I'm also a little suspect of the bright metallic gray 16XX dials we've been seeing. Those have been on ebay for 115 dollars.

Repainting DJ dials has practically been a national sport for many years, no one cared. If you wanted a puce dial get it done. To this day, original DJ dials are cheap and plentiful. Enjoy your puce and keep an original in a drawer if you want.

Our good friends at Wanna Buy A Watch have been selling high quality repaints for at least 20 years. It's my belief the salmon dials may be from there. Or another dial company copied them.

Here's their current selection. https://wannabuyawatch.com/product-c...om-dial-rolex/

Again, until the originality nazis came into the hobby a colorful repainted DJ was no sin. When you can buy original dials all day for 200 who cares? Wear the watch, don't let it wear you.
