Is this over-polished?

Hey all,

I've been searching for a gift for my father and came across a piece that could fit the bill.

I need to request additional photos from the seller but wanted to get your thoughts on condition.

Do you think this is over-polished for a mid-80's watch? I'm sure it needed touch-ups along the way, but from what you can tell has it been over done?

The lugs seem ok to me but the bezel looks like it's seen better days. I don't have any vintage pieces so I don't have a lot of hands on experience here.

To me that watch has been over polished. Lugs are thin and the crown guards are just nubs. I'd keep searching.

Case has been lightly polished in the past, but I would not by any means consider it to be over-polished. Bezel looks fine as well. Overall it's a great example, especially considering it is nearly 30 years old.

I must be looking at a different watch as the lugs and crown guards look fine to me!

Everyone's standard is different and it seems that this watch looks fine to others. But rounded crown guards would bug me. Below are pics (borrowed from HQMilton) of a 16803 with a bit less polishing.

It's funny that you grabbed that photo, I was referencing the same ones from HQMilton when doing a comparison myself.

The one I posted is definitely more polished but I really think some of what I'm seeing is lighting/reflection.

I just noticed this and it has me scratching my head a bit...

"RS4" bracelet code? Seems odd on an 8,xxx,xxx serial number case, no?

Granted the crown guards have been polished but they are hardly nubs as you stated (I think the photographs make them look more rounded than they actually are), but they still look absolutely fine to me. And what is wrong with the lugs exactly as again I don't agree that they look to thin?

This one has seen a few polishes which has resulted in soft crown guards with a slight loss of mass. The lugs remain fat enough but the lug holes have developed that soft hollowed out look. This watch would make for a nice wearer however if I was looking for safe queen material I'd look further

My thoughts also. Very typical of a preowned, older model.

I agree, lighting makes a difference and I'm not seeing a significant difference.

I agree a new sharp bezel ring makes a huge difference.

I am by no means an expert like some of the guys that have contributed in this thread, but I don't believe this to be "over-polished".

I still would not buy that watch because of the case.
Some people are not as picky about it, but I really dislike rounded crown guards..
If you can live with that, it is a great looking watch!

I greatly appreciate all of the responses! I agree that a crisp bezel would set the watch off nicely and distract from the other areas.

That said, I'm going to pass on this one. Upon closer inspection of the serial number it turns out it's a 1985, one year off of what I need. If anyone is interested, shoot me a PM and I'll pass along the sellers info. I think it's a pretty good deal.

Is this over-polished?

I think the pass was a good decision. IMHO the bezel needs to be crisp and less polished case/band is more desirable.

Happy Hunting and Best Of Luck to You!

Not sure if its just the pics, but it looks like the space between the lug holes and the top of the lugs is tiny! Very little meat left IMHO

I agree with the numerous others above that for a wearer it is fine. In fact, a pretty watch. If the price is decent maybe consider ignoring that it's softened by polishing.

Not sure if just the angle, but spring bar seems overly visible Protruding the lug Hole

I’m guessing the OP as moved on from this piece given this thread is 4 years old.

Boy I'd like to see the sides re lapped properly flat. :-/

The bezel is ... why do people polish bezels?...I just don't get it.

The whole definition is gone.

I'm not a case nazi. Polishing a case properly is fine by me, especially if it's been
done wrong in the past...but rounded bezels really burn me.
