Rolex GMT Master 6542 with non-gilt chapter ring swiss t<25 dial

$_57 (4).jpg

Greetings from London!

I am new to this forum, and this is actually my very first post.
I am currently looking for a vintage Rolex GMT, to treat myself for my upcoming birthday! Yay...!

Please let me know if posting links from the bay is acceptable, or if you prefer the photos only!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1958-Vinta.../191920122850?

I think at best it has service hands and a service dial!
The case back says 1/1958 - the swiss-t<25 suggests possibly early 60's, but why are chapter ring and lettering not gilt?

The hour markers also look strange (white lume with distinct white lines), and there are no markings of the bracelet's end pieces.

What do you think about the bezel?

I am curious to hear what you think!
Thanks in advance!

I would pass. Everything that makes a 6542 special is gone: dial, hands and bezel. Some of the service dials were not gilt so it is quite likely a correct service dial but it's not the original.

This is what separates a $10,000 6542 and a $50,000 6542

So if the top end of your budget is 10k, go for it.

My best advice would be to find a correct watch without issues.

Yep. If the price of this watch represents your budget, there are way better ways to spend your money on a GMT... a sound, continuous 1675 is out there within your budget just be patient. In the mean time, read up/study this forum and get a base idea of what to look for. I also suggest the selling forum on this site...

Thank you all very much, guys, for setting my head straight. You are all absolutely right to advise me NOT to buy an expensive vintage watch with issues! There are enough true and pure examples out there, and I will concentrate on those!

Sounds simple enough! What was I even thinking! :)

Just 3 days ago I bought to flip an original 1959 GMT 6542
But with issues....After 56 years in use it is to be expected
