Meteorite

I just got home from a long day at a conference about meteorites. Very interesting lecture. Of course, all I could think was about the Rolex meteorite dials. By the way, the meteorite used by Rolex is one of many different kinds of meteorites but a rather special one with high levels of iron and nickel.

Anyhow, I just checked the Rolex site to see which are the watches offered with a meteorite dial. Sadly, all I found have diamond markers, and the only watches I don't like are those with diamonds.

I'll appreciate all comments and observations regarding Rolex meteorite dials. Thank you.

That option is not available in the current catalog, though. I'll check nevertheless. Thank you.

What you saw in diamonds is called MOP that refers to mother of pearl. Meteorite Dials only available in white gold models and with Roman numbers

I've seen a yellow gold day date with a meteor dial. Not sure which year.

You can identify a meteorite by its Widmanstatten pattern,Rolex uses for there dials meteorite made from the Gibeon meteorite. The Gibeon was a meteorite that fell to the earth in prehistoric times in Namibia. And it was named after the nearest town Gibeon in Namibia now a 232 kg lump was first discovered in 1857 but many lumps between 100 and 500 kg were recovered in the years shortly after 1900 to present time. This meteorite has a very high nickel content, so it's very stable and basically won't rust. And the main cost is not so much the material around $5-$6 a gram for top quality slices. And one of the main reasons meteorite dials are not say on watches like the SS subs its the labour process costs to produce and polish a almost perfect dial that take quite a bit of time for every single unique dial produced.

I love the history behind this watch, a great story to tell even to normal people. Would love to see a ceramic version with sticks.

Exactly. Now, during the conference I attended, I had the opportunity to handle a couple of pieces of the same type of meteorite but from Chilean provenance. It's a shame that even though presently Rolex offers a great deal of watches with meteorite dials, they all have diamond markers. I'll be in NYC in September and will drop by the Wempe boutique to ask around. Thank you for your great response.

Not quite. No Romans here...

I have posted about this before. I still own other watches, but I never wear them. The meteorite masterpiece dial is amazing, and it goes so well with the fluted bezel and President bracelet. The only negative is the big up charge from Rolex for the dial.

Oh well, buy once, cry once.

Absolutely love that DD with the meteorite dial. Love it far more than the Daytona but seems to get much less love.

Not sure on the pricing but JLC also had a limited release of the master calendar with a meteorite dial which I absolutely love as well.

Thanks for sharing, I haven't seen a dial like this one in DD before. It looks cool and it's still an understatement though. The 5 minute markers is like 116900 Air King but they're solid and most likely in white gold. I wish my Air King also had solid minute markers too

A meteorite dial looks very beautiful & classy. I've always wondered what an amolite dial would look like? The cost would be astronomical, but it would be beautiful.

Love the meteorite dial...mesmerizing to look at.

Man, if I had one of those things, I would be staring at it all day...people would think I'm more obsessed with time than I already am.

Do they still make the meteorite Daytona? I've seen some conflicting info on that, and it's not on the site.

Also wondering if anyone knows if it's available on any other models? The site currently only has it as an option on the 31, daydate 36, and pearlmaster

Funny thing you asked that. I called my dealer and asked the same thing. They haven't returned me yet but recently I downloaded a pdf file that lists al the dials available with Rolex and meteorite dial is there.
I forgot what thread it was in.

I don't know why but I've never been an Omega fan. But those subdials made of meteorite are very subtle, understated, & classy as hell!
