Estate sale pick up - interesting numbers

Pickuped up this unknown watch at a local estate sale for $10. Had a feeling that it was worth the asking price...

Came home, cleaned it up (i.e. new crystal, clean the case). Turned out to be a an Rolex Speedking, model 4220 with absolutely crisp numbers, original dial, original hands, and a perfectly functional crown.

So, the first thing I did was to call the guy I bought the watch from, explained what he sold me, and offered more money. I'm sure some of the old timers remember a particular post from a member who proudly bragged about coming across a number of GMT/SUB bezels and inserts ... and explaining to the owner that "it's just a bunch of Timex parts" - I never ever ever going to behave in such a way.

Another interesting observation, this is the first Rolex I have ever seen with serial and model numbers on the same side (@ 6 o'clock) .... any one knows of any other examples????

Nice find. I had a similar experience finding a Speedking 4220 and only realizing after taking some Polywstch to the crystal that it was a Rolex. I did start a thread and post a picture here.
Mine turned out to be a WW2 POW watch owned and worn by a pilot British POW (whose name is engraved on the caseback) in a German POW Camp.
These smaller manual winding watches are not worth a lot but many have family history that makes them priceless. I had mine completely overhauled by LA Watchwerks and mounted it on a custom leather Bund strap and wear it occasionally just for fun.

With your expertise I have a hard time believing you didn't know this was a rolex. It has a super oyster crown for christs sakes. Great find though, no shame in snagging it for $10

He knew alright, hence the “Had a feeling that it was worth the asking price...” comment.
Good on him for offering the seller more money once confirmed.

Honestly, I did not know it was a Rolex. Yes, the crown, the case back, etc. indicated that it came from Rolex Co. However, without taking the band off and without being able to unscrew the case back, I initially thought it was an Oyster 3478. Though not seeing any numbers on the outside of the caseback intrigued me.

I don't have too many boy size manual Rolexes, so a speedking did not even crossed my mind. Live and learn.

not related to Rolexes, but at the same time I also picked up this Elgin
