My 1966 Sub 5512 just quit working, Need advice
Ive had this watch for about 3 years and its always kept exceptional time, If I were to wear it every dar for a few weeks it would stay within seconds,
Three days ago I seem to have come down with the Flu and I put the watch aside and didn't touch it till today, I noted it wasn't running and just thought that it sat for 72 hours and thats ok, I gave it a bit of a wind, Maybe 10 half turns and gave it a small shake and nothing, I wear it on a Nato band, I removed the band and tuned the watch over quietly and to my dismay I could hear something loose inside, I love this watch and this is quite upsetting to me, Ide like to send it off to be repaired and NOT restored cosmetically, Im in Philadelphia Pa if that helps, I did a web site search and there are so many opinions its mind boggling, Ide just like to del safe that this will get repaired and brought back to 100% working order, I have no idea why it stopped, It hasn't been dropped or abused and it hasn't been any where near water for months and months, I am sorry if Im asking a repeated question I was told by a friend Ed Christy in Allentown, But I can find any significant reviews, Not only am i down with the Flu, But my 5512 is down too, Sincerely Peter B |

Did you give a full 40 winds? The noise might be your rotor.

I'm not sure if your 5512 has a hacking movement but if it does and you think something is loose inside you should pull the crown to time setting position before you do anything else. Giving it a wind etc may cause more damage.

Watches need serviced from time to time. Find a competent watchmaker and ask that only a movement service be done. Someone local to you can likely advise a good tech.

it's a 50 plus year old watch, things happen, if you don't want to send it to Rolex do as watchcrank said and locate a local , competent horologist. Gotta be plenty in the Philly area ..............

You know I grew up in Philadelphia and I just don't have a keen feeling about taking the watch to "Jewelers row" and have someone say sure we will fix it, Then they go and mail it off to someone else to fix and things can get lost in the translation and I fear Ill get back my Sub with a modern dial and only an "Im sorry".
Ide rather send it either direct to Rolex or someone that has been used by someone here that has some good feedback on, I did not go 40 winds, I did however do the typical few winds which gets it going but Nada, Yes there is something loose in the watch as I can hear it when I shake it, I guess I'm just having a lucky streak, Still hoping for a good recommendation . Peter, hopefully someone local to our area will chime in with a good recommendation. If not than a trusted AD / Rolex path is what I'd take.

Try Govberg in PA. The 5512 is a good watch. Remember that's an old movement and parts are difficult to find. I had a parts problem with mine years ago. Rolex WSC Dallas could not get all parts for replacement.

Wind it the 40 times first. Older 5513's can be cranky to start after a full rundown
of the mainspring. The noise you hear is the rotor which is normal. |

Bob and Phillip Ridley did a fine job on my 5513 for me. Google
Watch Makers International. They are in Texas. |

I have to agree with the people who said give the Ridley’s a call. Phillip and Bob at Watchmakers International will take care of you and your 5512 in style.

If you can HEAR something loose inside of it, I think you’re past the “try 40 winds” stage of the game! Get it to a shop.
