Been a runner since 1970’s - now a walker to preserve the knees.

Over the years of training and over 70,000km I’ve come across my share of discarded coins. Mostly pennies, but sometimes dimes, nickels, quarters.

Here’s today’s find:

Anyone else take a moment on their walks, errands, runs to pick up free change?

No awards here for the worst road-rashed coins, but I wonder if this is a global phenomenon of discarded coins along the roadsides, sidewalks and parking lots.

I pick up all the pennies I can for good luck!

Glad I’m not alone then.

When I started, the coins went into a jar. Then it filled up.

Next came a gallon sized empty apple cider jug. Then it filled up.

Finally, after cancelling a home delivery water service, I graduated to a 5 gallon empty poly water bottle.

It got 2/3rds full and I carted it to a coin sorter at my Credit Union. Deposited over $600 into a “cub account” for youngest grandson at 3.5% interest.

Now he has something to show for coin collecting. Funny thing - the machine rejected about 50 coins and they gave me credit for all but the Canadian coins. I think those are more valuable since the Canadian penny is still mostly copper, right?

I'm a long distance runner as well, but never picked up a coin (or actually found/looked for them) during a run.
Euro coins are boring anyway lol

Of course I find a lot of roadkill coins in my metal detecting, but I always check those penny cups at cash registers for wheatie pennies, which I collect.

I pick up coins all the time and throw them into empty half gallon juice bottles. So far I’ve managed to fill 3 of them over the years. I’m curious as to how much the total is.

Found this in a park this week and was still in the Volvo’s cup holder.

Kinda along the same lines. I collect pre 64 silver quarters. Believe it or not people still use them as currency and don’t know the details about what they have. The ones I get are not in good shape since they are being used in laundry machines.

For those who don’t already know, in 1943 the Mint made bronze pennies, zinc plated steel pennies and a few copper ones.

I’ve seen zinc ones in the wild as a child in the 1950’s and maybe one SF Mint copper ‘43 in the Grandfather’s collection.
