These Tudor chronos look great. Where can you buy them? Auction sites? Dealers?

Congrats, Dan - that gorgeous! I know exactly what you're saying about the guilloched subdials - I can't get enough of the ones on my 79170!

I just noticed that the dial on mine says, "Prince Date" while yours and Craig's say "Oysterdate" - I'm not sure if either label denotes a later model.

John, they did make the 79180 at the same time (Steve has one of those), and that has a similar tachymeter bezel to that of the Daytona. Personally, I like the rotating bezel because it's more versatile. As Dan has noted, it performs a quick timing function, and because it's marked 1 to 12, it's also handy as a kinda-sorta GMT function.

Congrats Dan
You've gotta love The Big Block case
Here is my 79180, basically the same watch with a different bezel ala the Daytona.

Here's a comparison of the thickness of The Big Block case with the thickness of a 1665 Rolex Sea-Dweller:

Yep, your guess is right Gedanken - the dials with 'Oysterdate' are the early, older watches while the later Tudors from the late 90's onwards had 'Prince Date'.

John.
Hi John, well they kinda did offer both styles as they had three different models for sale at the same time:
The 79160/79260 had the fixed black tachy bezel insert
The 79170/79270 had the rotatable black bezel insert graduated 12 hours
The 79180/79280 had the fixed steel bezel (very similar to the modern Daytona).

Here's my humble Tudor collection:

Fixed black bezel insert

Rotatable black bezel insert

Fixed steel bezel

All three!

This watch pushes my buttons in so many positive ways.
- Case and Trip loc Crown by Rolex. That's cool cause I love Rolex cases! This one is nicknamed "The BIG BLOCK". It's huge.
- Screw down crown & pushers. If I fall off the bar stool and land in the pool, no worries.
- Two tone subs. I love two tones. If you got 'em, show 'em.
- Rotating bezel. I use the bezel as a timing device often. Plus, you don't see many with this type bezel.
- Val 7750 movement. My favorite chrono movement. Robust, trusted, and can be easily repaired. I use the chrono function often as well.
-Plex crystal. Easily polished and plex has a luster not found in sapphire crystals.
- Cyclops. Love the iconic Rolex look, need and use the date.
- Oyster bracelet. Has a Tudor clasp and is ostensibly exactly the same as a Rolex oyster bracelet.
Many thanks to those who PM'ed info to me.
Now for the pics!
dP
Those go for about $2,000 +, right? Beautiful. But yes, $2,000 is way less than $30,000.

Steve,
Thanks for the Sea Dweller comparison pic. Can't believe how thick the "Big Block" case is. I love it.

Neil,
Nice collection there. That silver dial 79170 is stunning.

Questions for the experts:
1- Does the rotating bezel have a click spring or does it move smoothly? [Mine moves without any clicks ala older GMT's]
2- Will Rolex USA do a full service on Tudors like they would for any Rolex?
3- How hard would it be for my watchmaker, w/ a Rolex account, to procure parts?
4- Can anyone tell me the year of production w/ a B504xxx serial #?

Thanks in advance,
dP

Dan,

I'm far from an expert, but I'll take a crack at the questions...

1. Moves smoothly, no clicking.
2. I sure hope so. I plan to send mine in.
3. Should be OK.
4. Serial numbers are different than Rolex. I've read this in several places. Try dating it with the code on the clasp. You can find a chart at Oysterworld and Oysterinfo. Mine seems to be an 87 model by the serial number and a 93 model from its clasp code. It was bought new from a local AD in 1996.

In comparison to the Tudor, even the mighty Seadweller feels like a lightweight dress watch! I have worn my Tudor most of the time for 11 years and never understood psople who'd complain about how big and clunky a Sub or GMT is! If they don't have the stones to carry around a Rolex sports model, there's no way they could deal with a "Big Block"

Pls pass on any Tudor info you dig up!

Craig,
Thanks for the info. The only thing I've found is this sitehttp://movements.dk/tudor_chronograph_79270_gb.htm. Not sure how reliable the info is though. Tudor history is hard to find.

I'd like to find another bezel insert. Does Rolex USA have the same rules about Tudor parts?

The MOVEMENTS.DK guy has a great site. His info is probably as accurate as any. I really like this guy's site. Lots of good info and a consistent interface. He joined TRF after he got a lot of feedback from us regulars.

Since a Tudor is indeed a Rolex (despite what some snobs try to claim), I'd say it's a really good bet that the same parts policy applies. I talked to Rolex Dallas last week about servicing mine. The technician was very nice, polite, and didn't even treat me like a 2nd class citizen for having a "Poorman's Daytona". Robb (a fellow TRF member) was in my office at the time! The good news is that the service is a little cheaper than the Daytona's! She told me to expect $400-500 to be in the ballpark for the total bill.

Like I said, there is very little info available on Tudors; BUT I have read that some of the vintage Tudor Subs used the same movement as the Rolex Sub. (I think that was in the 60's).

I'd buy a good book on Tudors in a pair of seconds! Keep us updated on any gems of info you run across.

So you can use the Rolex clasp code to date the bracelet? How did you find the date via the serial #? My clasp dates from Nov 1991.

Beutiful collection, Neil, and thanks for posting that link, Dan!

Dan, I don't know about answers to your other questions, but my bezel doesn't click either.
