I know the TRF prefers the grandes marques of Champagne, which are great, but my preference is for great grower champagne with Prevost at the top of the list (Selosse coming in a very close second). This is my acquisition today which include 2 of Climax, of which only 600 bottles were produced.

Sorry if this has been covered before but are there any recommendations for a good resource to develop a basic knowledge of wine. My palette isn't terribly sophisticated if whisky tasting is anything to go by but I would like to be able to get a basic understanding

I'd like to second this too. I've basically gone from drinking white zinfandel 3 years ago to switching to reds (mainly Cabs) purely out of a quest to find a nicer wine. This thread over the years has given me tons of things to try, living close to a major wine producing region has made it all that easier. So far my method has been to buy lots of different ones, store them at cooler temperatures and decant with tasting them during the process. I've found a lot of wines I love along the way and a few that get rave reviews that I absolutely hated. Along the way I've been able to slightly understand how some people describe different tastes in the wine although I doubt I'll get to a point where I can describe a wine as having "washed gravel" undertones

I think a good understanding of the grapes and harvesting could help me appreciate different types of wine. I've noticed there's so many different blends of grapes out there and each one makes a different wine, some I've loved and then the next year it tastes completely different (for various reasons).

Great dinner tonight. While I cook a lot, Laurie usually handles the inside cooking and I’m relegated to the grill most of the time. Today I told her to sit down and enjoy a glass while I took care of everything. Started with 50 roses, chocolate and her card this morning.

Opened the 2012 Chappellet Pritchard Hill Cabernet and decanted it at lunch.

And cooked the elk steaks tonight.

See if one of your local wine stores does wine tastings. Finding what you like is more important than learning what others tell you you should like. We have a mega liquor store here that does monthly tastings with the proceeds going to charity. They pick a them (region or varietal) and have their distributors set up tables - usually 15-20 tables with 8-10 wines per table. It’s a great way to try things side by side.

Decanted for an hour and really enjoyed this Merlot. Recommended for a Merlot in the $40 price range.

Thorn Merlot 2012 - The Prisoner Wine Company
Merlot from Napa Valley, California

Winemaker Notes
Deep purple in color, releasing aromas of black cherry with hints of cedar and pencil lead. Dense flavors of dark fruits and rich plum are framed by velvety tannins and a lush finish.

WS | 91
Critical Acclaim - Wilfred Wong of Wine.com

Are you game for this or do just want to say with the familiar? A sort of different kind of Merlot, the 2012 Thorn does not stick to the Bordeaux/Left Bank model. If fact I don't know what template was used to design this wine? There is an endearing note to this wine made me pause in my tracks. Perhaps it is the use of Malbec and Syrah that spins a different tale. After I had competed my look at this one, I simply have to call this one: An American Merlot with a mind of its own. Deep ruby, black color; bold and boastful ripe red fruit aromas, some sandalwood adds nice interest; full bodied, rewarding yet softish on the palate; dryish, moderate acidity, fine balance; nifty, ripe fruit flavors that take it far away from the Old World, delectable. Smooth aftertaste. Drinking now. (Tasted: December 2, 2015, San Francisco, CA)

No pictures unfortunately, but I just had a ribeye with 3 bottles of wine.
I had Justin Winery's Justin, Justin Justification, and Justin Isosceles.
Plain Justin was a disappointment, weak and overly fruity. Justification was good, but Isosceles was fantastic. Very non-Californian in style, felt more like a classic Bordeaux, so not a fruit bomb but more leather, currant and cassis. Fantastic wine.

Well I get 24 hours off from work tonight for the week, starting off with a decent IPA while I wait for the wine to come to temperature then decant. A new one for me but with a Ducks hockey game starting I'll be well taken care of with one or four of these in the meantime.

V Sattui makes some nice wines. Didn’t get a taste of the port when I visited. How was it?

Ports are good! Give them a try. I place a few wine orders each year and buy their wine futures too.

What'd you think of that Merlot Larry? The use of Malbec and Syrah in it has me intrigued. These are becoming my 2nd and 3rd favorite varietals each time I taste another one.

Coincidentally one of the local wines I bought last week grows their own Malbec grapes and I found their Malbec pretty good for a non-Napa or Chilean wine. (Shadow Mountain winery in Warner Springs)

We’re having our belated Valentines night tonight.

Just opened this Brunello for the occasion.

Decanting for 4+ hours and expectations are high 🤞🏻

I brought these to family dinner last night. The 94 John Riddoch is still bright and has many years in it. The St Henri is in its peak and has many many years to go on. Lovely wines.

It was good. I'm not a huge Merlot guy but enjoyed it. Based on your comments on your taste/pallet that one may be good for you.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We Really enjoyed this bottle! I definitely need to let the other bottles we have sleep for awhile. With time, this is going to be even better! I recommend this wine for sure...

Antica Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Cabernet Sauvignon from Atlas Peak, Napa Valley, California

RP|94 * JS|94 * WE|94 * W&S|91

Winemaker Notes
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a well-structured wine that combines power with richness. Bright aromas of red currant and plum lead to complex flavors of blackberry and mocha. On the palate the wine shows excellent balance and expression of fruit framed by firm, sweet tannins that bring elegance and finesse to the finish.

Had a 2013 Domaine Gangloff La Serene Noire Cote Rotie after waiting a while. These are nigh on impossible to get here in Australia.

Richard Hemming from Jancis' site summed it up perfectly.

'Bona-fide classic Syrah on the nose: the spice and black cherry liqueur character is utterly pristine, with stunning concentration and length. Absolute precision, yet far from clinical – there is an earthy, meaty naturalness to it that comes from sheer quality of fruit. A rival to my beloved Jamet? 19/20'

Cool label too!

2002 was an exceptional year for red in South Australia, especially for Shiraz.
