Random Rolex Daytona 116523 Encounter

I was moving through a long line for customs clearance at Shanghai International Airport recently and spotted a guy a couple of places in front of me with a beautiful Daytona on his wrist. Although I didn't recognise the model, the combination of the black dial, gold tachy bezel and two tone bracelet really popped on the wrist!

I was tempted to strike up a conversation and ask him about his watch but, perhaps due to the watchful gaze of customs officials, decided not to. Once I was able, I did a quick google search and discovered he was wearing a 116523 like this:

Interestingly, I don't think pictures really do justice to the beauty of this model. Based on pictures alone, if it were a choice between this and one of the SS 116520's, I don't think this would be my first choice. However, having now seen this one in the flesh, albeit for only a brief moment, I can say that it is a great looking watch and something I'd love to wear.

If you like two tone that one is really nice. The TT Daytona's usually sell at a discount which makes them even more attractive

This watch is somehow special, the real thing is much better looking than in any pics.

After admiring this a few weeks ago, I finally got to try one on in an AD. A really beautiful piece.

I agree. TT Daytona are awesome, alas contrary to popular opinions here on TRF. The SS/18K YG combo is something Rolex really dominates. Rolesor rules.

Do Costco sell with all the papers and warranty or just watch + box? Stick dial is stunning. Diamond dial makes the watch gaudy, imho.

They come with boxes and their own warranty, which think is 1 year (no Rolex 5 year warranty)

I know what you mean. I think the TT Daytona's have some of the sexiest dial combos around for the money. I mean, people are paying anywhere from a $4-$6k premium for the steel version and you can have a BNIB 116503 version for about 14k.

I had a close encounter with this one a while back and truly took every ounce of willpower I had to get out of the store without buying it.

I think Costco sell with watch and box only, but said if anything went wrong just bring it back to them. So I assume it's the general Costco warranty, return anytime with full refund and doesn't do repairs.

Personally, I love the stick dial better than the diamond dial too.

I think it's more than a year, more like lifetime of the watch.

Thanks for sharing. Some people say that warranty does not apply on Rolex watches, wonder if someone had claim it

Costco - wow! Now if they'd put up an older Zenith Daytona I'm looking for I'd be in! Sorry, but I'm throwback and don't normally buy anything that still in'production. Beautiful piece though. I also will be happy to go for a TT piece since I know for a fact everything that's out will someday be in again. YG 18K Presidents were totally out of favor for awhile. I know a lot of guys who are going back to roots and either wearing their TT 36mm Classic Datejusts or buying them. I just ordered a 38mm Zenith el Primero 1969 (hence the interest in maybe adding a Zenith Daytona and would get a TT for $8500 vs. $10k in heartbeat).
