Rolex vs Panerai
This has been chewing me for a month.
I just can't seem to make up my mind between these 2. Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller vs Panerai 233. What are your thoughts? This will be my first time owning both brands. |

Good luck! Tough decision.
IMO - Get the DSSD My tie breaker is the simpler dial of the DSSD opposed to 233 PR indicator on the dial at 6 o'clock. RGDS WKK The enemy of my enemy is my friend |

Tough call, but I would go with the Panerai. It's just one of those things....you either get it or you don't, but if you get it, there's nothing like a Panerai!

Between those two Deep Sea for sure! Now if you were saying the Deep Sea or a 225 hands down I would say a 225.

Both nice, but I would go with the 233
For some balance, post the same question in the Panerai forum here on TRF

Deepsea for me. But, then again, I'm a little biased.

233
Without question. GMT, 8-day hand wound in house movement, durable, ability to change straps easily. An Icon.

I was torn between the Panerai and the DSSD. I went with the panerai and regretted it, so I ended up getting the DSSD instead.
For me, nothing compares to a Rolex even though they are very common compared to Panerai, there's just something about them. |

Both large watches.
One is manual and has a modern vintage vibe. The other is automatic, can withstand hull-crushing depths and looks along the sub's lineage. Tough call, but the call is yours, and yours alone to make. However, I doubt you'd be disappointed either way. |

I've never owned a DSSD, but I have owned the 233. Between these two, I'd go with the 233.

I adore both of them... A lot. Probably my 2 favorite watches. Had a fair amount of wrist time with both.. The 233 being my daily go-to. I would say the 233 edges out the DSSD overall due to just the versatility with the strap change-ability, and its uniqueness compared to the DSSD, which comes across as a sub/SD on steroids (absolutely nothing wrong with that). My 233 always gets comments and admiring stares. The domed crystal on the 233 is just sublime with the sandwich dial and lume.
The DSSD seems a bit more rugged though, and doesn't collect scratches like the 233 bezel does, and on my wrist, wears a bit smaller than the 233. Either way you'll be ecstatic with your choice! |

I considered these a few years ago along with a PAM Submersible but I just wasn't feeling the PAMs so went for the DSSD. I still don't really.

Honestly I prefer the 233 over the DSSD but if this is your first foray into both brands then I recommend the Rolex first.

They have both different functions. The Rolex DSSD and Panerai 389 is a closer match and I would go with the Panerai 389. BTW, I own an era 1999 SD.

They both have a different look.
If you like the looks of an industrial appliance on your wrist that only a shirt 6 sized too large can cover up, go with the PAM. If you like the looks of an oversize classic, go with the Rolex.

I just sold both a PAM 176 (titanium) and a PAM 292 (ceramic) to finance my new watch. I loved the PAM's and both used to get me lots of comments. They go anywhere, they do anything and look good doing it.
Back to the question. I find the DSSD wears a tad too large, and the PAM 233 a tad more dressy. If i was going out to sushi (Nobu), I would want the PAM 233 over the DSSD. The PAM passes the sushi test. That is my answer and i am sticking to it. |

Tough choice. I've owned both but flipped the DSSD as I just found the dimensions didn't work for me (sat too high, and the side of the case profile vs the bracelet) didn't work. I think the PAM is a much more interesting watch and I like the versatility of changing the straps. What else do you have in your collection? Are you a flipper? If you are thinking of flipping, the DSSD is a better buy.

If neither stands out as the clear and obvious choice, maybe keep looking.

I own the Deepsea as well as the Deepsea blue and I would still get a 233. Either way you can't go wrong.

This is the rare scenario that I would actually choose Panerai over Rolex, but I'm just not a huge fan of the DSSD! Now, if you were comparing the 233 w/ an Rolex SDC4K, then I'd say get the Rolex hands down!

If you are looking at the D-Blue then I would pick that otherwise the 233.
