Papers or No papers how important

So.

Thinking of buying my second Rolex. This is a shop and the watch looks very good.

Only issue is the original paper certificate is missing.

How important is the original certificate to you. Its a good deal probably 700 less than with papers.

Would you buy one and be happy.?

When you are buying, papers are worthless, when you are selling, they are worth a fortune.

I guess it all depends on the person. I for one wouldn't purchase one without papers even if it were a couple hundred less.

If the seller is legitimate and the watch's authenticity can be vouched for, I would buy a watch without papers. You do have to factor this into the price when you come to selling owing to some not having the same opinion.

Sounds like you've got a reasonable discount to compensate you. If you like the watch and are going to keep it for some time, go for it!

The general rule of thumb that I've heard is that selling a watch without box and papers on a modern Rolex is about a $500 ding...and that no one cares on the other end...

Watch and papers only for me. In this fickle minded addiction, the papers are worth having when you are selling.

I wouldn't only buy watches with papers. Only exception is if it's vintage and I'm sure I'd never sell it. Even so I would still look for a model with papers. I can't ever see myself losing the papers. I just keep them in the box.

I buy watches with original certificates only without parts like box or booklets is fine with me.

kind of depends on the watch. What are you looking at?

Most modern watches will fetch $300-700 more for a complete set. If you have something a bit more rare or vintage the additional value of a complete set could be worth thousands.

this topic has been brought up maybe a hundred times, here are the search results...

If you're going to (god forbid) wear the watch and not wanting a safe queen.. what does it matter, really?

I get it if you're a serious collector and have all these mint museum pieces that are for show and education but a watch you intend to wear?

I think people forget this isn't a dress rehearsal, you'll be drawing your last breath before you know it and I can pretty much promise you, you won't be thinking on your death bed... "I'm glad I got that watch with papers, phew"

Tongue in cheek, maybe. But my opinion is, wear it and enjoy it. If it's genuine and nice enough to be cheaper without the papers, it'll sell just fine nonetheless.

Only matters when you go to sell. The pool of potential buyers for a piece w/o papers is smaller. It would rule me out for example. Good luck.

Couldn't agree more with you. The only decent watch I have bought without papers came with RSC warranty card proving it was genuine . Not that it matters really if your never selling, but the above post comes into its own if you are .

Do you trust the seller? Any reason to believe the watch is not authentic?

If all is good, you can send the watch to Rolex for a service, and it will be returned with documentation memorializing make, model and serial number.

I bought the seller, which if they are trusted on here then I didn't worry too much. I plan on keeping it forever but obviously things come up. I figured I would get documentation whenever I send to Rolex for service and those papers are probably all you need.

Most shops do not sell used watches with somebody else's paperwork and most people do not keep them either.

They are only important if they are important to you; nothing else matters.

So true, but to me they are important for no other reason than wanting to have them. I don't consider buying any watch without the original papers, others may, many don't.

Deduct around £700 from purchase, then take directly to RSC. You'll have fresh papers and a 2 or more year guarantee to boot.

Buying and selling.

Is the price right without the box and papers.
One of my watches I expect to move easily cause of the B&P that being said my Seamaster without papers was hard to sell

First what are these so called papers well in the real world mostly a outdated paper or plastic warranty thats all they are.And in today's world these items are far easier to fake than the watch. And I have seen paper warranties and plastic cards that would fool most today. So if not buying from a reliable source never reply on bits of paper/plastic cards boxes and all the bits to prove authenticity of any watch as the boxes and the bits are easily sourced on the net to make the so called full set.

Had a 16713 bought from Bobs watches and all their rolexes are good. No box or papers even if I have proof I bought from them still was super super hard to move. Had another one with papers and sold within a few weeks. It’s not important to me but it’s important to most people and because of that, I need to have it when I buy a watch

I only ever buy with full B&P regardless of the brand or how old. Recently I downsized around 6/7 pieces to trade for high end watch. No shortage of takers.
