Rolex 6542 with Bakelite bezel
Newbie question:
I have discovered one of these in a box of old family watches (I suspect it belonged to my great uncle). I was going to get a strap and wear it having worked out the function of it's 24 hour hand (useful to me since I'm a pilot). But having done a little googling and ended up here I see that it's too good for that. It seems to be in very good condition compared to some pictures I have seen. Since it has been in a box for several decades I doubt it has any non-original parts. I like it but I do not share the passion of some here! My question: Who in the UK can I take it to for checking and to verify it's the real thing Last edited by Welshwatchman; 1 September 2017 at 07:18 AM.. |

Pics please, as many as you can. Also, if there is a box and any paperwork around that will substantially increase its value. Also, be careful with it, those bakelite inserts are expensive and fragile.

Hmmm ... Interested to see the photos, although it sounds as if you've already done a lot of research, since you say yours is in better condition than some other 6542s you've seen. You're still not sure if it's authentic?

Posting a number of good clear pics here will give you a lot of comments on its authenticity. There are a lot of folks here with boat loads of knowledge on these. A lot can be discerned from pics alone.

It's bordering on breaking our rules for an implied sale.
Your IP resolves to a proper location, however. Please post another picture with the time set to 10:05 to show that the watch is with you. As for its authenticity, there are proper vintage experts who drop by. They would be better judges than I. If it's true that "offers are flooding your way", please don't any of the senders gripe here if it turns out that their saliva ruled their diligence.

That's incredible. How do people just "find" things like this. Damn. The only thing I find is dust bunnies. $50K+ watch all day. That Bakelite is sweet!!!

Always difficult to tell on bakelites if youre not very experienced. To me it looks AOK but would prefer to have it in my hand to judge. Watch looks nice and original with only the hands being later. Perhaps the lume on the dial is touched up but kind of hard to say from these pics. Looks a bit too pasty..
Nice watch indeed. |

Get on telephone, make appointment. Get in your plane and take a trip to Geneva. Rolex headquarters.
