Explorer 1016, thoughts?

The price of the 1016, has shot up significantly over the past week with several dealers and friends telling me that pricing starts around 12k ranging up to 40-50K for an EXPLORER. I am so glad that the explorer is getting the attention it deserves, I LOVE the simple steel bezel and the entire look, and it is perhaps my favorite watch of all time, although I am seeing myself priced way out of it,

I just bought my first vintage Rolex, a 5513 sub from 1980 and I am in total love, but it looks like the 1016 is outta my range until after school at least!

Awesome Watch

The prices have gone nuts within the last year, especially those with boxes and papers. I purchased a late 80's full set a little over a year ago and made the mistake of selling it. I saw the EXACT same watch on one of those fancy dealer sites for $8k more than I originally paid for it-and it didn't last long either. The few sets for sale I have seen recently are easily in the low $20k ballpark.

It is a fabulous watch, and it is my favourite to wear, it's so light and comfortable on a jubilee. I bought mine new in 1981, and have the full set to go with it. The jubilee came later in 1984, I have come close to selling a couple of times, but for one reason or another I didn't, and so glad that I didn't, not really for its current monetary value, but it holds so many memories, and we are still together after all these years. Its worn regularly worn in rotation with my other two, a TOG, and an Air King.

You can still get them for less than $10K if you look hard enough

It’s a great looking watch but the new one at 39mm is just such a better fit for me. I wish the 1016 was at least 38mm and it would be perfect (but that’s just my opinion).

I think prices have been climbing for the past year or two, not quite so suddenly as you say. I'm not quite sure why so high, though I love the ref.

I was looking for a 1016 two years ago, the prices were around £6k - £8k which was a little out of my budget, so went for an early tritium dialled 14270 instead. Kind of wish i'd stretched myself and gone for the 1016, although doing a quick look around, the 14270 has gone up around 30% too.

This thread has inspired me to stop wearing my 1016 while doing home repairs and yard work. It’s a great workhorse, but no need to risk possibly five figures on my wrist.

Matte dials have only slightly rallied. It’s the gilt dials that are going for insane prices. Especially the ones with closed chapter rings.

I love my 1016! Mine is a R series, watch only though.

I’ve put her out on the market a couple of times but then I changed my mind. I believe in the end this is gonna be my only watch. I use as it is intended to be used, no babying but certainly no bashing it around either.

A question for the experts, do you think that by time the dial can get tropical or is that a privilege of certain serial range only?

In direct sunlight I can see some fading already but that’s rather gray than brown.

My recent favorite photo of her capturing the beauty that I consider to be the best design ever made by Rolex.
