Am I Being Irrational?
Hello Everyone!
As you can see, I’m new to the forums here (and to Rolex in general too) and recently decided to acquire my first Rolex timepiece, a Stainless-Steel GMT Master II (ref 116710LN). I chose a seller on here primarily due to lack of inventory at the six ADs in my area and I just grew tired of waiting. The lack of peace of mind is why I haven’t been able to enjoy the watch completely. I knew going into purchasing a watch on TRF that there would not be a 100% guarantee of authenticity and that a buyer should “buy the seller”. I chose “justrolexes” because of his incredible reputation and feedback from other users. The watch came with everything: box, papers, hangtags, etc. and all aspects of the watch to my untrained eye look correct, but that “What if?” feeling hasn’t gone away. Due to this, I’m flying out to Beverly Hills on Tuesday to take my GMT to the RSC and pay the $150 to have it authenticated once and for all. Only then will I be at ease. My question to you all is, when buying from sellers here on TRF, do you not experience this same feeling? Is there ever any doubt in your mind that what you bought could very well be inauthentic, or am I just being overly paranoid? I’ll attach a few pictures of my watch below for you all to look at. Also, I’d just like to say that my worries do not reflect Tony aka “justrolexes” in any way. He is an outstanding individual and I would have the same internal conflict had I bought from any other reputable seller on TRF. Thanks in advance for the input |

In my opinion the established trusted sellers on this website would never jeopardize their reputation on this or any other site by selling a fake or frankenwatch, or misrepresent the condition of the watch. I have bought multiple watches from sellers on this site and never gave it a second thought. Your money, your piece of mind. Do what makes you happy. Cheers, Tim

A local AD should be able to authenticate it. You probably don’t need to go the RSC unless you’re headed to LA regardless.

Not irrational, but I like many others already know the results of RSC's check. In the future help yourself out and buy from an AD...watches are for fun not anxiety. Tony would never handle anything less than 100% authentic.

I've paid a little over the standard used market price to go with a big name trusted seller because I didn't want any doubts, but I can understand where you are coming from. Do we know if TS's open up every used watch they sell to verify if it's authentic inside? If they do, I don't think a trip to AD/RSC is necessary.

If your Rolex was not purchased from a Rolex AD have it checked out for your peace of mind.
I am sure your are not alone. I have certainly done this.

There’s absolutely no problem checking it for authenticity. It is your watch, and it should be something that gives you happiness and not uncertainty. If a trip to the RSC will remove that uncertainty then I’d support that 100%.
You’re not being paranoid ...just careful. I would say paying $150 to get peace of mind over a purchase that cost you (maybe) $8,000 is money well spent. As for others - different people have different views on the matter. There are some (like me) who’d only buy from an AD (while I travel all the time, my home market has many fakes and my personal nature would have me worrying about authenticity if I didn’t buy from an AD). Others are perfectly fine with buying from TS, and to be honest the large TS simply have too much to lose playing funny games. Then there are those in the middle ..a little .nervous at first, but gaining confidence with each subsequent purchase from a TS. Kind of like the first scratch on your watch ...worrisome at first, but eases with each passing day. Take the watch to the RSC and get your peace of mind. Peace of mind is definitely worth more than a buck fifty. |

Between the money to travel to LA and the cost of the RSC, you might have been better off buying from an AD. The whole reason for the term 'Trusted Seller' on TRF is to establish this trust to remove that anxiety or else this process would never work. Many Many watches are sold/traded this way on TRF and there is an open feedback system in place such that if there were instances of TS's selling fakes it would quickly be discovered and be all over this forum. The fact that this isn't happening is an indication that the system works. But as you pointed out, the 1st rule is to Buy the Seller and you picked well. If you had more experience handling a Rolex watch you probably wouldn't have these doubts. Fakes might be getting better, but they fool inexperienced people buying on-line. They would not fool an experienced person in the flesh.
I'd guess you can find a local watchmaker in your area that can give you peace of mind at a lower cost and save you the trip. You don't need to go to an RSC. The other thing you should realize is that the RSC will run the serial number and know where the card was swiped. It would be best not to tell Rolex you bought it from so-and-so on this internet forum. The TS acquires the watch for you and may not want to advertise his info to Rolex. |

Lordy that’s a lot of hassle.
You’re new to this and you’ll soon discover that most AD staff couldn’t find an authentic rolex with a roadmap and a native guide

Have to agree.
Based on who you got it from, zero doubt whatsoever.

It may not be irrational to have theorectical doubts unless you purchased new from an AD.
As for myself, I always have a preowned watch inspected by a watchmaker. However, and I mean no disrespect, but I do have a problem with buying from a trusted seller and then naming them in a post about theoretical questions about authenticity. Obviously the transaction was flawless. Obviously, the watch appears to be genuine. Obviously the trusted sell has a stellar track record on this forum. So, why name the seller and then raise theoretical questions? Again, just my take and I mean no offense, but I think this is bad form.

I’ve seen a fake 16600 that was effectively perfect. Sadly the so called replica factories are churning out shockingly accurate copies these days that would fool all but the very most informed.

Tony is a great seller and I have done a lot of deals with him and have never had an issue. The watch is what it was represented as and you made a decision to purchase the TS route. Stop with the doubt and wear your watch and enjoy it, it is real. Go get an appraisal and get it on your insurance. We all are at different points in our watch collecting and knowledge. You did your research and chose wisely, enjoy your watch.

I agree also. As you note, it's only your own paranoia that has you concerned. It has nothing to do with the seller. So why drag his name into it? It's not fair to him. It appears there is nothing he or anyone else could have done to alleviate your concerns.
