I currently have three manual wind watches. I find it somewhat satisfying and old fashioned to wind the watch. I even like winding my automatics.
That said, I buy a watch that I like, regardless if it is manual or auto. But I find manuals charming. |

I used to be so against a manual wind watch but now I really like it, especially if it has +36 hr reserve. I cringe when I have to manually wind my autos because some of them can only be wound 20 times, others you can’t overwind, and a few just shake to start with no winding. I’m always worried that I’m going to accidentally damage the auto by winding too much or lose performance but not winding enough. In my opinion the crowns of my manual winds pop out easily and quickly adjust. I feel like my autos are telling me “you really want to do this? Don’t yank this crown too hard”..lol

I forgot that my Speedy and Nomos are manual. Make that five manual watches. Too many watch syndrome...incurable.

Daily wear? Automatics. Special occasion? Manual.

It depends in the watch, so I actually like both. There is a PP model that is manual, and I like the Speedmaster "man on the moon watch" I don't either of those models, but I like them.
My grandmother (94) wears a lady datejust and gets angry because it keeps stopping on her wrist. She sent it to Rolex a couple times, and they say nothing is wrong with her watch and they suggest she wind it manually every other day. She feels a Rolex shouldn't have to be wound by hand, and she feels like I wasted my money when I bought it for her. I just don't have the heart that she isn't as active anymore and that's why her watch is stopping. She still thinks she's as active as a 21 year old. As for me I like winding my watches. I have a couple I keep out because I plan on wearing them, but they all wind down unless I wind them. I won't use a watch winder because I actually like interacting with my watches. I like having to do something to make them work. i wouldn't like having to wind all my watches every day. Only the couple I have out and ready to go when I want to wear them

Manual wind for me. I find winding a watch relaxing and gives me a sense of connection with my watches.

I've owned like 3 manual wind watches, and always end up forgetting when I last wound them. I love them for the occasional dress watch, or maybe even something fun for the weekend, but daily, I found I prefer autos.

I prefer autos for daily wear watches and Rolex etc. with steel case back but If I had a nice watch with a beautiful movement I would prefer a manual wind so there was no rotor obstructing the view of it.

Manual wind. They’re thinner, more fun, and there’s less that can go wrong with them. Yet only three of my watches are manual wind...I guess they’re much less common these days, for obvious reasons.

Prefer manual if movement is visible... however, not a deal breaker if auto

Depends on how many complications in the watch. If it’s just a day/date, then makes no difference to me as long as I don’t have to “unscrew” a crown to set the time or need a special tool/toothpick to set the date.
On something like my JLC calendar, I think I would cry if it wasn’t self-winding where I can leave it in an auto-winder when it’s not being worn. |

If I am wearing it every day I would go with auto, right now my 2 Rolex's are on winders, my Seiko Auto is in the display box. Overall the solar powered are great because no winding needed since I have been rotating a lot.

It’s nice to wind your watch, I have only one but like it, plus often a manual one has a more beautiful movement than an auto

I like both.
I also like interacting with my watches, setting, and winding. I do feel a little more connected, when I have to wind my manual watch every day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It’s a different kind of watch because it’s on a strap not a metal band. I don’t really get dressed up often so my milgauss is typically worn as my going to work watch. My JLC calendar is my casual weekend watch since I changed the strap to something more casual and my Nautilus is my “trip” watch depending on where I go. Other watches just get worn depending on my mood.

Most of my watches are manual but I bought a GO automatic about a month ago. The AD set the time / date and I haven't had to set it since, just wear!

Depends. If it has a calendar and moonphase I prefer automatic. If it's just time only or chronograph I could go either way.
Note- I don't own any calendar or moonphase watches currently. |

As a related question - how important is the movement look, if visible, in selecting a watch?

I feel that it depends on the specific watch. Is it a simple time only, manual wind: if a watch with any complications then, automatic. I dislike having to reset one or more. I have both types of movements, also quartz.

Based on what I have, my hand wind to auto ratio is 3 to 1, so I guess I prefer hand winding. :)
If you throw in the rest of my watches, then I prefer quartz. haha :D
