AP 15400 J-series vs. H-series help

Hi there.

I have been looking at the AP Royal Oak 15400 in steel for the past 2 years. The prices have jumped tremendously, and I feel like now is the time to buy before they really get inflated. Would you agree?

I found an H-Serial Brand new 15400 for $16,000. Should i pull the trigger? Is the only difference between the J-Series and the H-Series the year of manufacture? What are the drawbacks of a 2013 model? Earlier Service from AP?

Thanks so much for the help.

Wow those prices really have jumped!

Besides the potential for earlier service, the H series have a different clasp with 2 exposed screws. A few have had issue with them backing out (I haven’t) but AP will change out the clap to the newer style.

I would not feel pressured to buy now or risk every increasing prices in the future. This is a phase -- worst case you will pay MSRP for a brand new one. And given the price you are being offered, I would prefer to get one new with full 5 year warranty.

I have an H silver dial and no real difference other than the clasp as best I can tell. But I have never had an issue with the clasp so I don't see that as dispositive one way or the other.

Isn't H-series like model from two to three years ago? This is a NOS?

I cannot say for sure but my recently purchased (re-purchased actually ) J-series 15400 appears to have better polishing.

I see DavidSW has this watch. New/old stock. You have no warranty, that expired 2 years ago. Obviously it hasn’t been worn but would need a service in 2-5 years. That, I think is $900. $16k + service within timeframe of new J series 5 year warranty = pass

No warranty and I think you must know you buy a watch who are stay around 4 years!
You think oil on movement keep his property?
I think not and you can send it directly to service for revision.
Don’t compare ever AP with Rolex at this point! Rolex can work 5-10 years with no revision but this from my experience I can tell you this not work on AP!
So what you save when you buy you pay from service!

For that price, I would opt for a new one and just wait it out with the AD/Boutique.

I've made a thread about the visual differences between the lineage of the 15400 before:
https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=541471

The transition between the differences take place during the I-Series.

I'm surprised how much these prices have jumped. Given the expected service, a retail with warranty seems like the better proposition.

Isn't the retail price like 18K? Have them become hard to find in store?

Appreciate the comments everyone. I think I will pass.

Any chance that the price on these will go back down?

I remember less than a year ago a BNIB was around $13K.

Curious on your thoughts. Thanks.

Only way prices go back down is through less demand (economic recession).

Or if Rolex cools off and more buyers aren't looking outside that brand for their next piece, perhaps.
