Reprinted moon phase Rolex

I found a 8171 but with repainted dial. It is a good job. Original owner says Rolex repainted it during service in early 70's, is this possible? Of course it's very possible seller went to a "Rolex guy" back in his day and his claim isn't exactly correct.

How to value this watch?

I would contact Mike Wood or Jed for their opinion, both very knowledgeable on this reference. As far as a reprinted dial, even with that reprinted dial on, it will be quite valuable in my opinion since so few of these have survived.

Reprinted moon phase Rolex

Waiting for seller to send them. In the meantime, can anybody tell me if Rolex refinished/reprinted its own dials as a service option?

Yes, I think Rolex too refinished and reprinted dials to perfection, remember a post on that.

Would rolex Geneva have a record of this service, and could I obtain some sort of certificate or letter from them?

I see those letters occasionally (generally for milsubs, etc). Signed by a Truman, or Thurman, or something similar?

Ok got some pics (not great ones) but waiting for better ones. I'll post as I get them. Clearly the dial has been refinished. Numbers on outer track very thick, minute indexes are thicker and not evenly spaced from tick marks, the coronet is cut in half. OCC is written under the moon indicator (a hodinkee example I saw had this under coronet).

Thoughts?
