Hillary Expedition Watch

Seems too good to be true ! I would expect a watch with this provenance to offered at a speciality or auction house.

No evidence of documentation or proof of authenticity.

I think the seller means the model, NOT that actual watch.

Which from memory died with Edmund Hillary a few years later, and was recently found on his body (broken)

Maybe, but quoted from description :

“This watch was presented to Sir Edmund Hillary by Rolex Bosecks, Calcutta, India after his descent from Everest in honour of his achievement. It was then worn by him during the Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1955-1958 - the first overland crossing of Antarctica and the first expedition to reach the South Pole since Scott in 1912 - and as such it has immense historic significance.”

Buyer beware !

Yes understood
But as Gus stated (like myself)
"its the same watch but not claiming to be the watch."

Read closer.

That Hodinkee article is about a totally different watch! The Rolex Hillary wore on the Everest climb and then returned to Rolex (the climb's sponsor) for testing.

The ad claims to sell one given to Hillary **after** Everest as a celebration of his achievement. And that he wore later in the Antarctic Expedition.

I think the others are correct about it being the same model but not THE specific Antarctic watch. That said, it never claimed to be the watch Hodinkee wrote about. That article proves nothing.

Interesting ........................... I just ran across this photo that shows the case back. Looks like the seller would have included a photo of the case back if it was the Bosecks watch. Also notice the cracked crystal. ???????????

Seems shady to me !

This is curiously similar (apart from the red script) to another identical '53 6084 with a very similar similar story I posted about on here a couple of months ago (seller was a cook whose dad collected...yadda yadda yadda)....I should have bought it when it was at £1100, thogh seller kept yo-yoing the price in Dutch auction-style....

Strange how the wording is so very, very similar. The same levelof absolute suggestion, carefully worded to allow strong interprepretation without claiming absolute fact.

Anyone who uses this type of deceptive wording isn't worth dealing with no matter how they can explain away their intent.

Absolutely. It reminds me of certain lawyers.

Hillary watch?

I guess it depends on what your definition of "this" is.

Seller is clearly inferring that it is THE watch.

Hillary was cremated and his ashes buried at sea.
