Servicing a vintage Rolex

Newbie question...

Last month my grandmother gave my father a vintage Rolex Datejust which belonged to my great grandfather. The watch sat in a bank vault for at least a few decades, so obviously it needs to get serviced. My question is, does this need to be done by a Rolex dealer? To my understanding that costs around $700! Does anyone have any recommendations for a good place in Utah?

If i were you, i would send it to Rolex. I don't want to risk getting non-Rolex parts on the watch for the overhaul. It will run for 10+ more years with just conventional service every 5-7 years

There are Rolex-accredited independents that can do a perfectly good service... names like Rik and Vanessa are mentioned fair bit around here :)

Don't sent it to Rolex, they will want to replace everything that gives it family meaning and heritage value (to make it like new), and it can be hard to refuse their recommendations if you're not familiar with what really needs replacing and what doesn't.

OP, repairs will cost some money. Spend it (wisely, of course) and enjoy that special watch.

Giovanni Passalacqua was the contract Rolex Service Center in San Francisco, but he is now recently The Independent Service Center of San Francisco. He does excellent work and is very respectful of customer's requests for originality. My last full service including some extra 18k spring bars was $1000. And I got everything I paid for...a Rolex in perfect condition and keeping great time. Old saying among Ferrari owners..."buy cheap and pay twice." If you do not want to spend what it costs to fully service the watch, put it back in the safe and wait until you are.

I'm in the same boat, I would like to know if it would be worth servicing my vintage watch or just buying a new one.
