The black ones fade too, going a hazy grey colour I suppose. Probably down to prolonged used in water especially salt water and sun bleaching

Although the platinum PVD triangle on a GMT had the potential to scratch...

After over a year of daily wear, mine scratched yesterday. A metal hanger fell out of a locker when I opened it, and boom. Very sad to see. I didn't even notice until hours later. There is also a minor blemish in the crystal right next to the scratch... who leaves metal hangers in a random gym locker!?

curious about how this will look, can someone photoshop an older patina'd watch with a new bezel?

Try to put some elbow grease into the bezel and see if it would rub off. I had a similar incident but it turned out it was parts of the metal being worn off and stuck onto the bezel.

Ceramic bezels don't scratch easily, but they shatter regularly.

I have tried quite a bit, I just hope that this doesn't stand out too much over more years worth of wear.

How about chipping? Seems you could catch a corner of a number on something hard and chip the ceramic. Not sure if scratch resistant also translates to brittle?

If one were to shatter, what happens? Rolex will replace it? Any idea on cost?

You can fairly easily chip ceramic bezels on their own, just like anything made of ceramic really. Ceramic properties are higher scratch resistance, with vulnerability to chipping, cracking, and shattering.

If you look closely at the Cerachrom bezel inserts, they are slightly recessed. This helps prevent chipping, cracking, and shattering. Outside of extremes, this only leaves the small possibility of scratching during everyday use. Diamond jewelry is something I would be careful around.

Regularly? Oh, I´ve never seen this happen. I hope I don´t have to verify it ;)

Isn't funny if you think about it that we value it at thousands upon thousands of dollars? In the Daytona anyway, along with some very small sub-dial changes over the prior green tag 116520s. I bet Rolex loves that

They've introduced an achilles' heel into the professional line with those ceramic bezels but the ego marks buy into it just because it's the newest thing and that helps them feel good about themselves. Well, not really new considering Rado did it back in the 80s. I won't buy a ceramic Rollie.

That makes more sense now. I like the black / blue combination quite a bit, actually. Would be hard to do that in the US, with Rolex USA being so tight on selling parts / mix and matching between references.

Cheers,

It depends on your definition of durable. The steel bezel is more of the “bend don’t break” philosophy.

Ceramic can definitely scratch but it is difficult to do so.

Yes they can scratch - but over 3 pages of posts with only 3 guys that have scratches (with pictures).
My sub is scratched everywhere - but the crystal and the ceramic bezel.
I am going to say that short of a bike wreck, It's not going to scratch.
