YM vs Sub

I am rather new reader of TRF, however, I made an impression that Sub (date or no date) is extremely popular watch, however YM is one of under appreciated watches. I can not understand why it is so. For me SS/PT YM with blue dial is one of the most beautiful watches ever. Let's compare Sub vs YM:

1) YM is practically the same Sub with the same parameters, but more nice looking.

2) YM blue dial is much better looking (at least for me) than SUB blue dial

3) PT bezel vs Ceramic - I prefer PT and do not care if there will be few scratches (also PT is quite hard to scratch).

4) Price - not much difference.

From my perspective YM is much better and nice looking watch. When I put SUB on my wrist (no date) I was really disappointed as that was really dull but YM was really shining. My next Rolex will be definitely blue dial YM.... however, I should wait at least 1 year as my wife would not be happy with such purchase as I already bought 116333 one month ago :)

YMII is absolutely no no watch for me as I am not involved in sailing and do not understand for what that specific complication is for. Also, big name letters on the watch look really bizzare.

It would be very interesting to hear your thoughts on this.

Yachtmaster Blue is a beautiful piece, YM PT is also a very nice watch, but I fit into the majority of owners that prefer Sub's. Either way, sounds like you have found the style that works best for you, and that's what's important! So know...go get it, post some pics, and wear it in good health Brotha!

I am going for YM Blue over Sub as well for my second Rolex... It just spoke to me more than the no date sub. Can't go wrong with a Sub, it is a classic, but I think the sub I get will be a Kermit, a Hulk, or a Smurf some day :)

the YMs case wraps around the wrist and looks "true" to its size, the sub looks larger because of its flat case. for me they look so similar to each other that it's really just the way they wear and what color mix you want.

Both great choices but if you like the YM more then go for it!

I wish they would offer the sub with the YM case shape.

Sounds like you prefer some polished surfaces and colorful dials. YM is a great choice!

Best is to have both, a little Platina, some blue and the best watch case ever designed. The YM wears like a glove

To put it simply, the sub has been and will always be, the more popular choice due to it's iconic status.

YM is very much under appreciated. Check the used prices on these watches, really can't think of a better watch to buy then a used YM. There is a even bigger discrepancy when you compare used market of yellow gold version of YM and subs. Great value all around.

It is. I wonder why it's not more popular? There should be a long waiting list for this!

Yes, you are right! I really like nice dials, precious metals and polished links. Also, watch functionality is important as well. Due to these reasons YM wins over Sub in all cases for me. Besides full PM SUB seems really odd for me as this is divers watch. TT is acceptable for SUB but I already have TTDJII.

Sub is more iconic, but the nice thing about the YM is that you can have something a bit different from the rest of the crowd. I've always liked it but haven't pulled the trigger

This is not really correct. Pt is very dense but not very hard and is very prone to scratches. Density is not the same as hardness.

Over the years, I've gathered that these are the reasons why the YM is not as popular as the Sub -

1) The YM's bezel collects scratches quite easily and is expensive to replace because it's made of platinum.

2) The YM's bezel rotates in both directions unlike the Sub's, so it isn't a diving bezel.

3) The YM is rated to only 100m or 330 feet, while the Sub's depth rating is triple that at 300m or 1,000 feet. So the Sub's case is stronger.

Hope this helps.

I suppose that the YM was built for that small segment of folks that don't like the utilitarian appearance of the Sub.

Personally, a YM is not even on my list of "maybe" watches, but I have a half dozen Subs..

I owned both, I prefer the YM blue dial because it is different from what most people wear (sub, sd and gmt). Platinum Bezel and the blue dial are amazing when the sun hits it!!

Selling mine to fund a project....check out my YM ad, and feel free to ask me questions, thanks!

I love the blue dial and the red accents, but I prefer the better balanced size of the Sub's bezel and its numbers.

They can coexist and do. But the yacht master came along in the 1990s. The subs been around for over 60 years. Also if you dive you cannot use the yacht master because it doesn't have a safety bezel.
