If that was an offering from Rolex people would be loosing their minds and lining up with cash in hand.

I am not going to lie, I love that colour combination. Not sure about the pushers and I don't know why Spike Lee has a "signature" Daytona, but I would love one.

To each their own. I wouldn't purchase that particular watch, nor do I understand why Spike Lee would have his own signature Daytona but if they can sell every watch they make-- more power to them!

My take on Spike Lee's Daytona
The Splashes of orange colour on all the subdial hands and markers, hour/ minutes hands and the piston pusher seem overly done in my opinion, the dial looks colourful and tacky. An Orange Black combo could perhaps been a better choice.
Now compare the distribution of orange in a more sensible and tasteful way on the dial and bezel of Omega's updated Speedmaster Racing. The arrowhead indexes are all white gold (On white Superluminova ) by the way... I guess Spike Lee really loves those signature colours, huh ?

Kind of an M package BMW color scheme. I kinda like it.

. Only redeeming quality is the concept of not having 5 lines of text on the dial

Don't know why they make these celebrity collaboration things. Just because he's a Hollywood director doesn't make him a horological genius, or a good watch designer. I mean, what's the connection?

Reminds me of a line by the late great, Mitch Hedburg :

"When you're in Hollywood and you're a comedian, everybody wants you to do other things. All right, you're a stand-up comedian, can you write us a script? That's not fair. That's like if I worked hard to become a cook, and I'm a really good cook, they'd say, "OK, you're a cook. Can you farm?"

Does it really have to cost 40K to destroy a Daytona?

It's not something that I would ever wear. But neither were the beach Daytonas. And when those were out the AD's in Orlando could not keep them in stock. They flew off the shelves.

I think it looks kinda cool. Would I buy it or wear it over a regular Rolex?

Nope

I was thinking the same thing. It’s red white and blue also. Kind of a patriotic theme from Mr. Lee. Who would’ve ever thought! LOL

Not me. Not by a long shot. Its not even close to a traditional Rolex.

Well Brett, is an LVc traditional?

Is a SS Sky Dweller Traditional?

Is the DSSD JC traditional?

Is the SD43 with a cyclops traditional for the reference?

Did I miss any other non traditional Rolex that is currently sold out?

LOL. I’m quite sure I have no idea what you mean but then again I went to public school so you’ll have to have patience with me. Try again.

They can try to legitimize it with a Hodinkee article, a celebrity endorsement, and a fancy name (Les Artisans De Genève)... but at the end of the day, they're still using the Rolex brand name to sell their design. This may technically be legal, but they're piggybacking on Rolex's IP.

Sort of weird how the Hodinkee staffers are going to bat for this piece in the comment section... if Rolex ever provided any special press access to the 'Dink, they should stop now.

Only that they were all original and made and sold by Rolex.

How many of these could they sell if the dial said "Les Artisans de Geneve" and not "Rolex"?

Basically you nailed it. 80% of Rolex purchasers purchase because of the 'name'. The people on this forum are the minority.
