OK, I’ve decided on my Grail.
This was an important decision in my life. After all, if we don’t have dreams... what do we have? Right? Now, I LOVE my DJ 41 (Picture below). It really is everything I expected and wanted in my next Rolex. Elegant, classy, definitely attractive but not ostentatious, it has gotten more comments from both WIS and non-WIS alike then my sports models ever did; (GMT, EXP II). To me, it is the quintessential Rolex, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. BUT... like everything else in life (at least mine) as soon as I got it I wanted something better. I bought a Ford then wanted a Lincoln, I bought a Tumi bag then wanted a Gucci, I buy a DJ 41 immediately I start lusting for a PM model; ... ... I’m a sick man .
So, I set off on a quest... which model Rolex do I set my sights on? PM for sure but Gold or Platinum? Sports model or Dress? I mean, these are important decisions right!??!?!?? I spent hours, toiling through the Rolex website, spoke with my fellow TRFers and wore ones they were kind enough to let me try on. Asked questions here on the forum, considered every aspect... I was on a mission! The field was narrowed down. A couple things right off the bat. I decided I wanted Gold, and WG at that. Nothing against you that own Yellow or Rose, I just want the more-subtle look of a WG watch. The next decision was more difficult... DayDate 40? Or WG GMT Pepsi? One thing I really miss from my old GMT days is the usable bezel. I found myself relying on it all the time, remind me of appointments or phone calls, parking meters, (I actually wish Rolex would bring back the Turn O Graphs). I decided... The Classic President, the DD would be my next grail. Well alrighty then... Which one? White Gold... but which face? Roman? Indicies? Color Dial? I mean... it’s a difficult task wading through all the choices! I wanted a lighter-colored dial... either white or silver, but what about the markers? Romans without the Lume? Or standard indicies like my DJ (giving me the ability to read the time in the dark). Hours and hours I languished.... until finally.... looking at the Rolex website... the picture sang to me right off my Ipad. So, my grail... pictured below... is the DayDate 40, Silver dial, indicies (Lume) all WG. It was a tough decision, but I am glad I made it. (Of course, not sure I am EVER going to be able to afford buying this grail Definitely not anytime in the foreseeable future..... But.. at least I know which one I am lusting for |

Great choice Paul that's a beautiful piece if you marry a woman for money that could be in your near future

Ah, a fellow insomniac.
I too picked the DD as my grail watch but for me it has to be the DD40 in yellow gold with champagne dial and baguettes for the hour markers. Have you been to any of the local Rolex dealers to try on any of these watches? I’ve tried mine on a few times now but it really is ridiculously expensive. |

Similar situation. As the DD is similar to my DJ, I chose the BLRO. After I bought my BLRO, I am still thinking of getting the WG DD black dial with diamonds.
When looking at the DD40, I found that the Roman numerals model is less legible except the white dial. I saw a gentlemen wearing the WG DD black dial with diamonds and diamonds bezel. It is gorgeous. Also black dial is more contrast. |

The WG DD you show is stunning. A friend has one. I would look at gently used as the depreciation is awful as you know.. I hope you get one sooner rather than later. Paul.

Based on your first statement above, and his logic, this would seem to be a good choice. Quote:
Heck, while you're at it, try every single one of them on. You might be surprised what your thoughts are of something in the flesh vs. pics. Good luck and happy hunting! |

The DD is an excellent watch and the Rolex flagship to boot. I admire the watch, but I don't do precious metals or pay more than four figures for my watches, so it will always be beyond my reach.

I agree, we all need goals. I would go with something in YG, but the DD is a great choice. Good luck and start saving!

Great choice Paul. Silver stick dial is pure class. Alternatively YG with champagne stick dial.

I have to echo, the "go try some on first" DD is hard to beat, its the Flagship and shares its bracelet with no other Rolex
