Good Stuff for Sure... Prices for the Reserves go to another level but worth it.

Icon7 Sliver Oak SALE!

24 Hours Only - 2008 Napa Valley Cabernet 750 mL

Ends September 26 at 6am PT or until sold out.
$150.00

2008 Napa Valley Cabernet is a complex and layered expression of California Cabernet. The wine has a dark garnet color and is bursting with fruit even as it is poured. It has a nose of cassis, violets, licorice, allspice and roasting coffee. On the palate, it has an extraordinarily rich attack, a satin texture and an exuberant expression of fruit on the mid-palate that comes from picking grapes at the peak of their ripeness. The wine finishes with notions of savory umami and fruit with a medium tannic grip. Given proper cellaring, this wine will give drinking pleasure through 2032.

Got that same email from silver oak today. After a quick search, looks you can do a bit better on price elsewhere. Am I wrong?

Not sure, might be... I thought I'd pass it on if anyone was interested.

Couldn't tell you what the names were, but had some very nice Italian 'house' wines, both red and white, while dinning out during our trip along the coast so far.

This seems like a common feeling on this thread.

There were 16 vintages tasted last night. The 2014 and 2015 were terrific and more easily found. Two vintages were oxidized due to the winery trying a new technique. A very delicious and interesting night.

It's funny you mention "oxidized due to the winery trying a new technique" what vintages were they? Did they go into any details?

As I'm sure you know the late 90's and early to mid 00's for many Burgundy producers were plagued with PREMOX and it's not been accepted publicly by any of them, let alone any speculation about handling/bottling experimentation as a possible cause. Any additional info they shared would be very interesting!!

Oh yes, you are right on the money. It was PREMOX and the vintages were 1999 and 2000. They smelled really off. The taste was not terrible, but there were much better wines to drink than wasting time with those.

I am still in a huge learning phase so I find these events very enlightening.

Premox is just a compound of "premature oxidation", POX is an even shorter short of the same meaning. Did they give any details around this "experimental technique" they were alluding to?

It was supposed to be a new and cleaner way to make wine using a soft pressing of the grapes and less sulfites. The result is the skins are not mashed. This leaves the resulting juice without much needed ingredients resulting in an early oxidation that ruins the wines. I am paraphrasing what I heard to the best of my feeble memory.

Very Nice!!

Will just mention I was at tasting diner with a complete vertical of Crow, and I'm not sure I felt like aging did much for the bottles we had. Peak seemed to be about 5 years and there didn't seem to be a benefit beyond that.

Some years were already dropping off frankly.

Curious what your thoughts are?

I agree that SCrow are much better than most of the "Napa cults" when they're young. My vertical goes back to 2009, with a lone bottle of 2007 coming back to me when temps nationwide get milder and shipping windows from some warmer areas start to open up. Planning to pop an '09 next year, and judge accordingly.

Which years did you think were on the decline?

I thought 03 and 06 were meh, but thought some off-vintages like 08 and 11 were a bit of a surprise!

Love it. Recently got my allocation as well. No magnums for me just the 3 pack.
In my top 5 for sure!!

Will definitely need a long ‘nap’ in the cellar.
