how does one feel about accumulation of too many pieces?

I have accumulated quite a few nice pieces. Some i barely wear, but challenging to sell also. How does one decide when enough is enough? What are thoughts about keeping pieces that are hardly worn? Not looking at pieces as an investment, and hard to decide how many pieces are enough. I thought 2-3, but now Im at 9. Any advice on how to go through this journey?

i have my engagement watch, a gift from my in-laws and my two pateks one going to each kid so 4 that i can't/won't sell. in addition to that i try to keep it at 2 or 3 more, so once i go beyond 7 or 8 i sell what i don't wear. the losses i take on them sometimes is more than makes sense selling them but realistically i never would wear them anymore so they go.

They are expensive and there are much better ways to store your wealth than watches. If you don’t wear them often I would liquidate, and pull investment funds when something else catches your eye.

No thoughts, still in too deep ! Most of us are good at buying and bad at selling.

Cull the herd. I’m down to 4 and couldn’t be happier. I’d like to get it down to three ideally.

If I find I don’t wear a watch, I move it along. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out why I don’t enjoy a specific reference, but once I know, I know and I move it along.

3-4 max. Less is more and quality over quantity

I have about 8-10 right now with 2 being Rolex, 1 Tudor, the rest are sentimental pieces I’ve acquired throughout life. I basically only wear my blro. The goal for me is to end up with a “daddy’s watch” for each of my girls, so theoretically I only need two.

I have walked my collecting up and down over the years and have been as high as close to 30 watches and as few as two. I have stopped overthinking it and I buy what I want and can afford and wear what I want. Wrist time is great but I do not have to give a watch a lot of wrist time for me to keep it. Once a watch has lost that feeling for me of being cool, special or whatever it is that makes me want to own it I move it along. This is a fun hobby but sometimes I think we put a little too much into thinking about it and forget that the fun is the watches. Enjoy what you have and if selling some make you fell better then that is good. The measure of happiness is determined by you.

At my worst I was at 18. Now sitting pretty at 6 with one or two more I'm on the waitlist for. After many many years of this I keep finding that 6-8 is the sweet spot, for me.

There are no watch problems only money problems for me lol

If I had FU money I’d never sell anything. I don’t so I tend to shift one out when I find something new. Typically I keep between 4-8 pieces.

7 is the no. that I’m aiming for. Once I’m there I think it’ll be a case of 1 in 1 out.

My suggestion would be not to have a box with too many slots, I have one with 10 slots (but only 6 watches in it) and each empty slot feels like an open invitation to buy another watch. Not good, I’m really thinking about buying a smaller box just for this reason.

I have 25 at present, from a diverse range of brands including inexpensive micro brands. I enjoy all of my watches and don't feel that I need to sell if I don't wear a watch for quite a while. I've sold three watches that I regret letting go over the years and so don't tend to do that anymore unless for whatever reason, I just don't bond with a watch.

was at 4-5 for most of the past 20 years...and then somehow started slowly adding 7-8 years ago and was up to 10 by last year. Largely due to Rolex becoming somewhat disproportionate in the collection (always had 1-2, but had 5 at one point).

Over the past year have sold into the rising Rolex market (said goodbye to Batman, Hulk and Explorer) and also sold off some dress pieces that weren't getting worn much anymore. Now down to 5...feels about right again.

5 for me. Realistically only 2-3 in rotation so even that is too many.

I currently have 6 and that seems a bit much. I want to sell my JLC but will take a significant hit.

Currently at 9 (if you don't count vintage watches or g-shocks).

I agree with most above, I think 6-8 is the sweet spot.

7 is the magic number, one for each day of the week. However, for me this is an aspirational number, that seems difficult to reach. There is always that one last grail one wants to add

This.

I am not much of a collector type of guy. Rather an enthusiast who likes to be able to choose from a few nice pieces. Currently down to 3 and happy, 5-6 max.

I try to keep it to one main watch, and then 1 - 3 cheaper ones that are easily sold if I get bored of them.

too many is such a relative number :)
My limit number keeps creeping up and I don't even want to say where I am at anymore

3 to 4 is all I need and want. There are dozens and dozens of watches I like that are easily affordable and obtainable, but less is more.

7 is the right number. Scientifically speaking.
