Isn't it easier to just eject and let the plane sink? Think of the highly valuable additional jobs with excellent benefits and included health care you're creating to replace the plane. Don't land it, ditch it and get a new one

It’s a trick question.

Both the Captain and FO would have to become disabled before you’d be asked to do it, and if that happened nobody would be capable of unlocking the flight deck door for you to enter.

Several years ago a few of my flying club buddies and I did ATOP at the UAL training facility in Aurora, CO. It was like drinking water from a firehose, but worth every penny of the admission price (now $495). I made three landings in a 737-200 at SFO, with one of them at IFR minimums. You have to have at least a private pilot certificate to register.

On the flight deck. It was my turn to be the first officer (right seat). I also got my high altitude certification while I was there.

You only have to spend a bit of time driving around the place to know that 80% of people are pretty awful drivers. You don't notice the 20% that ARE good.
As for the aircraft - it's a bit like how many people think they could drive an F1 car.
The trouble with an aircraft is (than unlike a simulator) you don't get too many chances with an emergency landing.

Not only could I land safely, I'd probably bring it in backwards just to show off a little.

100% could do it. Hardest part would figuring out how to call airbus/Boeing : "how do I enable the autopilot?"

I once read:

"Confidence is a feature. Certainty is a bug."

My confidence is that I can follow instructions. If the person on the other end of the radio was FANTASTIC, and the conditions were IDEAL, there's a CHANCE I could execute a survivable landing.

And I'd be both the weakest link and the smallest factor... if it worked out, it was the pilot on the other end of the radio that was the hero.

Low chance the plane would be reusable.

How confident are you?

If I have to I'll TRY to land a plane!

The reality is that there would be a mad scramble between everyone to get to the cockpit to land the plane and inevitably a fight would break out on who was more qualified to land it.

He's an engineer. Why do you need to ask such a question? Lol I'm joking. I am an engineer myself. I couldn't fly the plane.

I mean I would definitely crash in a spectacular inferno, but right up until then I would be doing great.
