New to me Panerai

I’ve been bitten by the Panerai bug again. I really wanted a 42mm luminor, which obviously they don’t make anymore. So I managed to pick up a mint 1392 with an open caseback and hacking seconds. Perfection.

Great looking watch OP. I predict a Panerai renaissance in the not too distant future.

They made quite a few actually, lots of submersibles atm still in production and previously some 42mm luminors such as this and the 1393 etc. They're the goldilocks size for me with small wrists. They even did a few 42mm wire lug radiomirs (337,338). The 40mm luminors just don't do it for me.

I do hope so, they need to play it quite careful I think.
They are releasing the new 40mm radiomirs at £5400 which is better than I expected! This is the field they need to be in. Not £10-15k.

Just so you know, you can wear 47mm PAMs but not all 47mm PAMs are created equally. My wrist is only 6.25” and the below are two of my 47mm PAMs on my wrist. The case shape and strap size/thickness make a very big difference when it comes to wearability.

These two are 47mm wirelug Radiomir cases with thick (5mm) straps. In general, most straps are 4mm thick. Adding an extra mm of thickness helps balance the watch on a smaller wrist (as you can see below). Also note that wirelug Radiomirs wear materially smaller than 1950 Luminors, even when they are the same size (i.e., both 47mm).

That said, a small (6.25”) wrist can still wear larger 47mm 1950 Luminor case PAMs. The below is a 526, which is one the largest and chunkiest PAMs made, on my 6.25” wrist. It’s paired with a 5mm thick canvas strap, which, as you can see, balances out the large chunky PAM on my small wrist.

For reference, the below is a PAM 1389, which is a 47mm Luminor on a thin, approximately 3.5mm thick, strap. As you can see, the 1389 looks GIANT on my wrist despite being (and generally wearing) smaller than the 526.

EDIT: Edited to include a picture of the 526 on a thick strap in a very similar position as the 1389 on the thin strap to show the differences a strap makes.

Please feel free to PM me with any PAM and/or strap questions!

Congratulations, love the blue seconds hand. Adds even more character to an already cool watch.

Thanks for taking the time to post that. The photos are great and love the watches- especially the regatta. I have been eyeing that up with envy and wishing I had a larger wrist. Looks great on you though!! Perhaps that's my sign to go and try some on!!!
