Finally added the 5164A - My thoughts

After a couple of years of a crazy market, I finally added a pre-owned 5164 to my collection. I mostly own dress PP and wanted a sports watch, it has now been my daily watch for a few weeks.
I read a lot of articles and reviews and wanted to share a few things I considered for my purchase :

Technical
  • From my point of view, the most useful complication in a watch as I travel a lot
  • Absolutely love the details on the dial with day/night indicator on the timezones
  • Very versatile: can be worn in all types of weather
  • Stealth
  • Can be worn formal or casual, often worn by Patek Thierry Stern
  • One of the most comfortable watch I ever owned, very light
  • Diameter is just right compared to more recent Aquanauts

Value
  • Last retail price of steel 5711 was close to 30K USD while the 5164 has a retail of $42K. I personally find more "value" in the 5164.
  • In the current market, it's the only Aquanaut with a complication selling below the 6 figures (had a peak of around 120K but I doubt if they sold at that price...)

The future of this watch ?

Afer a launch more than 10 years ago, maybe it will be replaced in white gold ? maybe just a larger diameter ? I wanted to add it to my collection before anything change :)

What are your thoughts on this watch ?

Great watch. Great complication. But it’s a little monotonous for me.
I think there’s still room for a 5164G or if the next interaction comes I hope it’s in G with both blue and green colours. Size wise it’s definitely the right spot.
Congratulations!

I've had my 5164A for 5-6 years now, it's a fantastic watch. Useful complication and stealthy under the radar. Love it.

I simply love the 5164, like you said OP - it's versatile, comfortable, stealthy, has the right diameter and height for me, love the dial design, and also love the Travel Time function. It's just overall a really great watch fit for most occasions.

It’s my favorite travel watch. IYKYK. It’s slim, light, unremarkable looking, reliable, and seldom seen. Still wish I didn’t need a pusher for the date but it adds to its charm.

Neat watch and much better dial without a date window.

Congrats! My favorite GMT out there, even with the phallic GMT hand. Hoping to add one later this year.

5164A is a great watch! I have had mine for 10 years and it is a keeper.

It would be hard to believe that 10 years ago, the AD had 2 of these available for sale and was offering a discount off the list price

I wouldn't call it slim. it's 2.1mm thicker than the 5167 and it's also got the pushers, making the watch look much much bigger. But if you have a sizable wrist and can pull it off, it does have the more interesting dial.

I would love to have 5164R but the price in secondary market is still way too high.

That’s the one and the only Aquanaut that I will ever purchase. Congrats!

i'd go 5167a for real everyday watch or 5164r for the bling. No need for travel time watches really, i doubt people really use it nowadays. It's just a fancy complication amongst others.

Congratulation wear it in good health . Im still between 5164 and 67 from grey and to be honest i feel both are still high . And weirdly keep going higher against the market trend.

Can you let me know how much did this cost you ?

thanks

sold mine last year for £80k after having it for 4 years and plenty of wear, is a great watch and I loved it... I got the jitters with it when it got pointed out by randoms who don't even wear luxury watches down my local pub and did get a few non desirables checking me out in city area of London so not sure it's exactly a stealth piece....

wear it, be careful and enjoy!

You did well.

Ive been monitoring them and they appear to be around 60-65k from dealers at the moment. I think 5167 has retained grey prices better
