Like it or not, watch collecting is really a lot like art collecting. As practical items, our mechanical wrist-watches have little value - we all should be wearing Solar Atomic G Shocks Squares if we really only cared about the technical proficiencies of watches. As such, really shouldn’t be upset when brands try stuff that’s outside the box, and that includes Rolex

Yes, this release along with the OP may be outside of the conservatism Rolex is typically known for, but for people to paint it as something undesirable and only for the nouveau riche, in contrast to how their affliction for the “serious rolex” of yesterday somehow makes them better shows a massive lack of self awareness. Again, the watch hobby is itself one that has almost no practical value, so best to not take it too seriously

But can’t you change out the day and date wheel? You already can on a “regular” day date (date can be changed to Arabic or Chinese numerals for example; Day to any number of languages). So really, you’d just need to order a “regular” Day or Date wheel and then you’d have this dial and could have your watchmaker/authorized dealer swap back when you feel like going back to emojis? Am I missing something? Maybe Rolex won’t sell the day/date wheels, but I imagine that many owners would have other DayDates so not sure how’d they enforce at the moment…

Is there anywhere that it mentions that this is benefiting some sort of charitable cause?

Hell, Rolex itself is some sort of charity tax shelter scam right? I learned that here.

Having an 8 year old son that is autistic, I love the awareness and can only hope Rolex donates to the various charities. Not the watch for me, but I have no hate whatsoever on this release.

I think it’s a fun cool watch. I also have a feeling this will be a very limited release and probably the only ones seen in the wild will be on a few celebrities wrists

I think this is one of the worse things Rolex has ever done. Its a joke with a Jacob and Co vibe. I was really hoping this was not real.

I think it’s great. After all, we’re all talking about it and giving it exposure.

At least it’s something different.

So very, very weird... Regardless of whether we like the dial or not, the "day" and "date" wheels filled with cutesyisms really turn me off.

Omega pulled maybe the biggest analog watch space coup ever with that release. I loved it.

Wow, there are a bunch of seriously grumpy old farts on this forum. Please take a pill and get over yourselves. Being an old fart myself, I think this watch is wonderful. I doubt I'll ever see one, but I am most definitely going to express interest with my AD. All the better if some of the proceeds go to charity.

Honestly I've always thought of gold DDs as pretty tacky watches. They always either remind me of Glengarry Glen Ross or look like costume jewelry from about five feet away. Flame suit on.

Like it or not, these will be the hardest to get and sought after. Maybe on par with the new Platona

Exactly! Every luxury sector desires to bring in 'newfound' youthful enthusiasts.

You guys are all relatively new here so you might not be familiar with the culture and the rules.

The tired, divisive, sociopolitical crap that you're parroting in an otherwise interesting, entertaining thread about WATCHES adds zero value. You make TRF a worse place when you do this. Nobody comes here to read about your politics, my politics, or anyone else's politics. A lot of us come here to get away from that very thing. That's why Rule #6 exists -- to distinguish TRF from your Twitter and your Reddit, where you should feel absolutely free to preach to the choir of your choice.

It's good to see others standing up and giving you a hard time for introducing that garbage here. Just because Rule #6 doesn't get enforced all the time doesn't give us permission to ignore it.

Each of you posts a lot of good stuff about WATCHES, so why not stick to WATCHES when you post on the "Rolex General Discussion" forum? Nothing bad would happen if you did that!

Personally I welcome the creativity on a watch like this which will certainly be made in very limited numbers. When I got into watches 15 years ago the presi was an old man’s watch. In recent years that’s changed and they’ve made a huge comeback.

This is no different than a rainbow Daytona in my eyes anyway.

Oh and if your not in Kim K’s circle you’re probably never touching one anyway so if you hate it dont get all worked up, your normal day date options haven’t been replaced by this lol.

I didn't realize that these (a) were only 36mm and (b) had champlevé enamel dials. The dial will be interesting to see in person if that's ever possible.

I also wonder what the 31 different emojis/symbols are -- if any of them are interesting and if they're displayed in any discernible order.

The key features of this watch remind me of some of the old Alain Silberstein pieces. This watch below has champlevé lacquer on the side of the case (same process as the Rolex dial except lacquer instead of the more fragile enamel), and the day is displayed using 7 different facial emojis (before the word "emoji" existed in the common vernacular I think). You can see the smiling red face (for Sunday) towards the top left of the dial, to the left of the "06" (which is June, the month window). Monday is a pretty pissed-off face, and the faces get more neutral and then happier as it goes from Monday to Sunday.

Surprisingly I like the yellow gold one, but I think its only really suited for the collection that literally has everything else.

That said I think it would be better it they had regular (albeit coloured) day and date wheels, I'm sure a few (at the very least) of the words / emojis would be a bit cringe.

As someone who is finishing his PhD in Behavior Analysis and studying to be a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, this watch got my attention with the Autism Puzzle Motif. I've decided I am going to buy myself a Rolex upon the completion of my degree in December, but I am doubting I'll even be able to see one of these in person...
