Rolex Spoons, in detail

While in Rome a few years ago, the hotel had pamphlets for places to visit. My wife always picks this stuff up to look over. In the stack was a card that said if you stop by the Bucherer shop they would give you a Rolex spoon. Being a watch collected and since we were heading to Interlaken any way, we stopped at the store and got my free spoon. Well, 20 years, 55 Rolex watches and over 100 spoons later, I thought I would share a bit of what I have discovered.

Most of my spoons have been 50 cents to $3. With the exception to a few, that is about the limit as far as value. They are silver plated or stainless, although I hear rumors there is a sterling silver one out there, but I have not seen one to date.

Bucherer started in the 1950's with a non Rolex logo design that read "Bucherer Watches Lucerne". It included the lion in the bowl of the spoon. Around the same time, they began giving out the first Rolex marked spoon as a promo when you purchased a watch. This spoon had the Rolex displayed in a cutout at the spoon top and also included the lion in the bowl as the signature Lucerne trademark. Cities you can find the spoons for include;

Basel
Bern
Burgenstock
Davos
Geneva
Interlaken
Lausanne
Locarno
Lucerne
Lugano
New York
St. Gallen
St. Moritz
Zermatt
Zurich

Sometime after this and as they expanded to more cities, they issued several variations with the Rose in the center of the handle in a narrow and a broad pattern and then the Swiss Cross in current spoons.

Attached is an image of one of my displays, hope you enjoy the read.

Interesting. I didn't know there were so many kinds. Where did the display rack come from?

I have 3 from various trips to Lucerne, I always thought it was a very neat thing for them to give out.

The rack came from the local goodwill. The coaster came out of a 1970's set of coaster that included Burger King and other retailers, trying to make money off of the Rolex name, but still a neat piece of history itself.

I would note the markings on the backs of the spoons

B 100 12, this meant 100 grams of silver was used to plate 12 spoons, or 8.33 grams of silver per spoon

CB69, if you look close with a loop you can see it is actually 6.9 for 6.9 grams of silver.

CB with no number is used on stainless steel

There are a few spoons with no marking on the reverse, I have not identified the materials in these spoons as yet.

I believe that is based on a standard spoon.
I don't remember for sure but I would be surprised if the Rolex spoon weighs more than 10 grams.
If that is correct it would have been cheaper to make out of coin silver.
