Do you think

Watches are getting “sold”, when they are in fact not.

I know the oldest trick in the book.

I’m not perfect however I’ll never be a salesperson.

Was talking about this tonight with a neighbour who noticed an eBay seller relisting the same Rolex he had “sold” twice before. When asked about it, the seller said previous buyers had pulled out. I don’t think there’s anything new to learn from this except repeating the hoary adage ‘buy the seller’.

What situations were you thinking of, Berty?

What is the result of this? I guess the question is why would someone do that?

False economy even in good times it happens, setting false bench marks. One of the oldest tricks in the book and I’ve seen it many a times last few months more so..

If nothing sells no one buys.

If you’ve seen it many times in the last few months it may be of benefit to us all if you explain exactly what you have seen. Two or three examples would suffice. Thank you.

I don't want to name any of these, but I've seen this kind of "tricks" on some reputable forums too. This method suggest the search engines' robots that there is a high interested for the actual watch, and morover it can be sold for the sellers suggested price. Marketing strategy.

Absolutely. Several people here, including myself, will acknowledge seeing a well known dealer do this many many times but for a different purpose over the years. There have been many threads or comments about it going back years. They were doing it not to show that there’s an actual market at said price but to show demand for price increases, “I sold one for X three weeks ago, now this one is listing at X+”.

Quite possibly. Then again, possibly not. That’s why I was asking for examples.

Yes. This surely does happen, especially in a down market. Another reason why folks shouldn’t buy watches for resale value.

Very likely. Art, classic cars, jewellery etc… Fake inflated sales or no sales to influence the market. Then they pop again up after a while or hide in a lake or barn for a decade.

Probably not so art, classic cars etc other then the barn trick, it is when you have multiples of one reference/identical product ie. ten pandas, list one at 32k it “sells” next one listed at 32.9k etc. It does work but there can be an end game.

Not hating but life is a game of smoke and mirrors.

Yep, tried to engage him but he's beyond reasonable. He has about 30 seconds of content in a 15 minute vid. Just keeps saying the same thing over and over.

Sure the market is unstable and the future isn't certain considering the state of the world/economy etc but in the end I have up on him...
