Leaked Navi 70th anniversary redesign

Just stumbled upon this on Instagram (see photos below). NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo just signed with Breitling as an ambassador and this is his first photo shoot with a watch on. Guess what? He’s wearing the next generation Navi. Clearly looks like the wings are back (looks like AOPA wings not the modern winged Breitling logo?) and also the date has been moved to inside the 6 o clock subdial instead of 4:30 position. Small aesthetic refinements (the Rolex way?) and they seem fantastic to be honest. Guessing we see this in March officially?

Looks fantastic. I’ll be even more excited if it has some water resistance, too.

Many, many colours coming, and all have in-house movements - even the 41mm models.

Oh man. That's awesome. I hope 41mm. Not sure how I feel about the date. Yes, its more integrated, but the date has been by the 4:00/5:00 position since they started with the date on the navi

Didn’t know about that reference. Wow, they were like 48mm way back then.

No word on size but there’s no reason to doubt that it’ll be powered by the B01 given the pictures shown with the same layout as the Chronomat.

Yes, they will be in 41, 43 and 46mm, and they all have in-house movements.

Looks great! They nailed it. If I didn’t have my 1959 re re I’d be all over the 41. This size wears perfect boys.

The date hidden away in the "6" subdial is something I've been asking for for years. I despise 4:30 date positions with a passion - they always look like an unbalanced afterthought to me - so this new Navi looks superb to me.

I just hope there are some traditional colourways - a reverse panda with a deep black dial for example - as Breitling have been a bit "way out" at times with their dial choices lately.

I heard talk of Breitling attempting to improve the WR of the Navi, so it'll be great if it's at least 50m, if for no other reason than making it easier to clean them under the tap!

I've heard recently that we should expect some "unusual" colourways.

If there are some new colours, I really hope there will also be a couple of traditional ones as well.

I'm in!

43mm Reverse Panda ... on 'gator

I would've gone with 41mm but this dial combo is not offered in 41 as far as I could see...

I have to say, I think the new Navi is hands-down, the single best release from Breitling since the CVC takeover.

Great to see a full selection of sizes - 41mm, 43mm and 46mm - and although there are some unusual colours, I'm just incredibly pleased there's still a classic black reverse panda in the 43mm (and 46mm) size. That said, I think the silver and ice blue dials are absolutely stunning. The combination of brushed and polished surfaces is a nice change over the full polish of previous generations, the AOPA-style wings look great and are a nice nod to the heritage, and I love the date at 6 as I can’t stand 4:30 date positions.

The only slightly negative observations I'd make are that I'm a little disappointed about the butterfly clasp on the bracelet. The lack of micro-adjustment is a real issue IMO, and is the main reason I don't wear my Chronomat on the bracelet. Personally I think butterfly clasps are antiquated and should be relegated to history, or at least reserved only for out-and-out dress watches, but then again the Navi is a strap watch IMO so it won't be an issue at all for me. The other observation I'd make is that I think it's a shame not to have a reverse panda in the 41mm size (although again it's not a issue for me as I'll be getting the 43mm), and I also think the 22mm lug width on the 41mm looks a bit out of place: I think 20mm would've worked better personally.

The only other thing I'd mention is that it's a shame it's still only a 30m-rated (i.e. splashproof if you're lucky) watch as I heard Breitling were at least looking at improving that slightly. However, I know the WR issue is an inherent part of the way the Navi is constructed, so I can only assume it was a technical step too far without changing the fundamental look/DNA, which should never be allowed to happen.

Overall I think they’re a superb release.

I like the refinement and minimal but important upgrades without a radical change in this watch which is probably the most iconic of the Breitling watches. However, if there was any way to increase the WR to 10 bar, I wish they would.

If the Chronomat 42mm with a display case back can be 20 bar, couldn't the modern Navitimer be 10 bar? I think I'd rather have that than the display case back.

In any event, its a knockout and a great addition to the Breitling line up.

Unfortunately the WR problem isn't to do with the display caseback; it's due to the bezel design. It's a rotating bezel but it's not external to the case, unlike dive watches for example. With 99% of dive watches you can remove the bezel and the midcase retains it's water resistance. On a Navitimer however, the bezel and crystal are one unit that forms an integral part of the case, so if you take the bezel off the crystal comes with it. In other words, the WR is only as good as the friction fit is between the bezel and the case.

I tried most of these on yesterday. They’re awesome. I was so excited that they finally made a 41mm Navi, but after trying them on I still preferred the 43.

Being a pilots watch, I think Navitimers belong on a strap, but the new bracelet is cool and very comfortable.

As much as I’d love to get one, I’m still saving up for that blue Duograph.
