Pic Request: correct 16750 insert

Considering swapping out my much later insert for a period correct one.
My 16750 is from '82.

Did a 16750 also come with a black insert?

I believe the 16750 was the first GMT to have the option of the black insert.

Came with black or Pepsi. Most of the early matte dials - for a short period - came with serif insets. Pretty rare though.

The black insert also looks good.
Here's my 16750, would the period correct Pepsi insert look significantly better/different?

Correct bold font looks better, IMO, and is sort of uncommon now for 16750s.

[QUOTE=stmoore;5402130]Came with black or Pepsi. Most of the early matte dials - for a short period - came with serif insets. Pretty rare though.

I am a little confused regarding the serif inserts.

The early 16750s came with red back inserts. I have never seen any red back serif inserts from the early 1980s that I recall. Most of the ones I am familiar with that have the tiny serifs are blue back inserts. As far as when they switched from red back to blue back inserts is anyone's guess. Personally, my educated guess would be that sometime around 1982, which is close to the midway point of production for the 16750 matte dials, would be a good guess.

Are the posted photos with the serifs red backs or blue backs?

This is what came with my 7.4 million 16750. I have not owned it since new but believe it to be correct.

Red back is correct for early 16750 inserts

But I'm curious to differentiate it from a 1675's

I would disagree with that assumption...red backs did come on the early 16750s.

Also, the serif inserts with the blue backs can be found with the introduction of the 16760 GMT II. When they appeared on GMT 16750s is anyone's guess - especially with the red back. Personally, I don't believe the serif inserts were on the early 16750s,- which in my experience, had the same insert as the late, slimmer font, 1970s red backs with the oval "8s" in the top loop - which gave way to a more rounded "8" with a red back during the early 1980s which progressed to the blue backs inserts.

I thought he was referring to red and black on the front of bezel John

Serif fonts have extra decorative design on the end of letters and numbers. Its the little "tail" you see for instance on the 2s. Modern Rolex font design does not have these, they ended sometime around 2004 AFAIK. I have two GMTs from 2003 and they still show Serifs and I had another GMT around 2004 or so that no longer showed it on its original bezel insert..
