Wish I had never sold.....

How many of us have said that about a car, watch, guitar, coin and so on. How many times have we said "If I only knew it would be worth that much now". I have had the luck to own cars that had been in our family from date of purchase and they did increase very nicely in price.

So here is my bright idea. I have a Z SD that has only been worn to take pictues; and I did dunk it in my salt water tank once for a photo or two. Other than that it is just like it came straight from Rolex. Has all the goodies, including the plastic stickers. So, I am never going to wear it again and just store it as is; with plastic stickers still on the watch. Not concerned about an increase in value over the next 20 years as I will be gone by then. I just have this thought than one of my kids in 2026 will have a true suvivors watch with all documentation. I know it will need a service, that the plastic will have deteriorated, and other signs of normal aging. I once sold a 30 year old Corvette that still had remnants of the window sticker, and it helped in the sale and gave it a "unique" quality at time of sale.

Sorry to say that you guys will have to wait 20 years to see the outcome.

Cool story. I've kept all my Rollies so far. I'll probably flip on for another watch...not sure though.

Joe, you've inspired me to start a new thread in the general section: I wish I had never gotten rid of...... because I am currently having great angst over something I sold for a song that is now worth lots of cash....

Maybe a good idea for an investment who can tell?, but I bet your kids will remember the ones you wear a lot more as they will have an emotional attachment and your children will be richer for that experience.

I like the idea, however a similar scenario was brought up before. A member was considering buying two identical watches with the thought of storing one and leaving it for his son down the road. The consensus was the son would probably rather have the watch that dear old dad wore.

Revive this post in 20 years and lets see how it turned out

Of the many nicer old cars my dad had, the best story is of his 1956 Jaguar XK140 MC roadster. He sold it to his brother when he bought a 1961 Fuel Injected Corvette. A few years later, his brother traded it at a VW dealer for a Beetle.
Now worth ~$80-100K USD.

I have four kids that do not have a Rolex yet as they are ages 5, 9, 13, and 15. At age 18 they get to pick one from my collection and I will replace it with a, new to me, Rolex. What I will do is take a picture now of each kid and their choice and see how their tastes change over time..

Will they pick a Rolex at age 18? I didn't start looking at one until I was in my mid 20's, still in school and couldn't afford them :) First Rolex was well into the 30's...

Agreed. Each one has a special sentimental value for me, whether it's because I received it as a gift, was my first own purchase, etc.
