This thread is funny. When the original Daytona came out, ADs couldn’t give them away. The zenith daytona was discounted up to 30% in the 90s (i know, I bought one and still have it). Explorer II was always a zero interest watch until a few short years ago, I bought mine new in 2011 for 3750 usd because, again, nobody wanted them. GMT was the same for over a decade. Its funny how times change, all these variants are now hot, right? I bought the wg ym II for its size, looks and, relative scarcity at 50 cents on the dollar. If someone resurrects this post in 10 years from now, let me know how my predictions on the YM II WG were...in the meantime, I will wear my rolex ym II while bumping into 5 batmans, 3 hulks, 1 blro and 20 submariners every time I walk down the street :)

Personally I would say it isn’t underrated. The general concesus regarding the reference is pretty accurate.

I havent been on this forum for a while but seems YMII is out of favor these days. I will hang on to my SS version with blue steel hands as i think its the perfect summer watch but to each his own.

It's not underrated at all, it's rated exactly where it deserves to be.

It rates quite well for what it is. If it weren't a Rolex it would not even be as well liked as it is (which is not very).

Can you imagine if it were a Breitling? Well, actually it kind of looks like a Breitling. Come to think of it, it might do quite well with a Breitling name and price point.

The YMII is the most expensive sports watch in the rolex sports line. If you need to show off this is the right watch. It's the king of rolex sports watches. That's all simply for show off if u r a show of guy this is the right one

I wouldn't consider it to be the King - I would reserve that title to the Deep Sea JC version

the other thing to consider is can a niche watch even be underrated in the first place? Its as popular as its supposed to be.

An explorer II is an underrated watch. Its a GMT and placed between the explorer 1 and GMT II as far as crossover appeal which are both mainstream watches. It on paper should be more popular than it is. That is what underrated means to me.

A YMII is not the same.

I’m happy the watch is largely reviled in our community. That invariably means less were bought, less were owned and, it makes mine both rare in the real world and, rare in the future re-sale world.

I'm assuming it's a complex movement that is expensive to make.

I actually like the watch and have tried it on. But at 46mm it's too big for my wrist. Kind a cool shorts and t-shirt watch.

99% of answers wanting to hate the watch for either personal preference or unpopularity. After all its you who decides whether you like it or not.
Personally I love mine, and yes I would confirm that "SS Sports KING"

A lot of irony in this post given your signature line. I give you credit for being honest, but it’s a shame that it would hold you back if you really like it

Not wanting to wear something unloved despite secretly liking it yourself makes sense to me. Kind of like not wanting your mates to see you with a fat chick.

Back when I wanted to "show off", I considered the YMII. It's the most expensive SS model and I believe the largest.

After actually thinking about it...I realized the blue bezel is not that versatile and I'm no longer a huge fan of the large Yachtmaster lettering. I also think the white face is too blah.....and the complication is pointless unless you own a sailboat. At least with the Sub...you can have the 10 on the bezel at the 10 second mark, 20 at 20 seconds, etc. However, the YM bezel adds nothing useful.

I'm sure most peoples' first question after seeing the watch on your wrist would be, "Yacht Master? Do you own a yacht?" Me: "No." I think you would look a bit silly there. I also feel the white face would be hard to tell time on...

I wear a Submariner and nobody has ever asked if I’m on a submarine crew.

A watch as aesthetically loud as the II was never bound to catch on with the public. Rolex is at its best when it takes an understated route.

It is a watch for big guys with large wrists. For such a person it is not obnoxious nor does it scream.
If you want screaming obnoxious see a Leopard Daytona and it isn't even 40mm.

That’s my point. That’s because your watch doesn’t have SUBMARINER in huge letters on the bezel.

I've had my YMII YG for over a year now and no one as asked me if I own a yacht or anything like that. I don't think that's a question people get asked cause they are wearing the watch but I could be wrong I guess

That's the exception! On the YG, people just see gold and probably don't pay attention to anything else!

I'm not knocking the YM.....I actually love the size.....I just am not a huge fan of the colors and the Yachtmaster writing...it's the first thing you notice when you should be noticing the watch itself.

I personally would not have bought the watch in anything other than the wg variant. I am not a fan of the blue dial on the other versions but, the platinum bezel on the wg blends perfectly with the watches aesthetic

Like many others I use to dislike the Blue bezel even to the state where I hated it and always wanted WG just because of the bezel... as time passed by I think blue bezel is the attraction in YMII it sets it apart from other with blue bezel and white dial... that's just my personal opinion...
