best vintage GMT pepsi
Hi all, a little help would be appreciated. I've got a Submariner 116610LN, about a year old, and I'm thinking about getting a Pepsi GMT. The 116719BLRO doesn't do it for me on many levels, colors, materials, size, price...
When I bought the Sub, I was actually going to get the Batman GMT, but I realized when I had it on that it wasn't really what I wanted. I went with the Sub, which I feel is aesthetically closer to the vintage models than the new GMT's are. So I'm looking to see if anybody has any opinions on favorite reference numbers and years of GMTs. Anything I should specifically avoid? Thanks! |

Personally i prefer a later model 5digit GMT. I like solid end links and no holes cases. So if you want that as well you need to start at 2003-2007. SEL’s started in 2000. And no holes started in 2003. But you also used the word “vintage” so im guessing you want older than 2000 anyway.

Purists claim only 4 digit refs qualify as vintage... not sure I agree.
I have a 1990 16710 and a 1979 16753. Both wonderful watches and a pleasure to wear. The bracelet rattle of the 93150 exists but is overstated IMO. Sent from my cracked, broken hand wound phone. IG @morning_tundra |

There are several great models to choose from. Try the Reference Library which has several threads on the GMTs. https://www.rolexforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=22 Here is a good thread to start with which discusses the variations and nuances between the GMT and GMT II models: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=568151 Personally, I prefer the vintage acrylic crystal models - the GMT 1675 and 16750. I normally wear a GMT 16750 matte dial which is probably my favorite vintage GMT model. The later "classics" with sapphire crystals - the GMT 16700 and GMT II 16760 and 16710 - are also great watches with the GMT 16700 having a true quick set date feature (like the GMT 16750) and the GMT II's use of a semi quick-set date function. The GMT 16700 was made in much lesser quantities than the 16710. All these models and production dates are discussed in the referenced thread mentioned above. Good luck.

Personally, I am a 1675 fan. A 2.1m, long E dial with some insert fade and dial patina on an oyster rivet is my daily...
A lot of members here tout the quickset of later models but I think that convenience is over rated. I rather like setting my watch as its part of the vintage charm and if spinning a crown for less than a minute is an inconvenience, you sound like a millennial. :) |

Whilst a fan of the 1675, you could not go wrong with a 16750 or 16700.....both are excellent !

I like the Root Beer models with the Jubilee bracelet. I don't own one, but it's on the bucket list!

6542 or bust!
But seriously, I'd say anything gilt or matte dial (before the 1983ish gloss period began) is the way to go. There are many definitions of vintage but I think these two periods define it for the GMT. So 6542, 1675, or early 16750. But personal preference should trump anything said on here. Get what speaks to you, is original, and doesn't land you a night on the couch for spending retirement funds. Andrew gmtmaster1675.com |

I've tried them all and prefer the 16700. The case is thinner and more comfortable. Good luck.

I like the 16700. They only made it in Pepsi (or black) and it has a quickset date function (unlike just about every other GMT). It's rarer than the 16710 and will appreciate better in my humble opinion. Plus, good examples can be found reasonably cheap.

Ok it’s not a Pepsi but legitimately vintage GMT. Acrylic. Shamfers. Open 6’s and 9’s. Nipples. Gilt dial...and can be had for very reasonable money - 1978 16753

I was looking for a vintage Pepsi GMT recently. I'm not a huge fan of the modern ones with the ceramic bezels and solid, polished links. The Coke and Pepsi aluminum inserts of the older models are beautiful. I wanted an older model that I could wear daily, but that might actually appreciate like many of my other Rolexes have. The various GMT/II models have added different features through the years, an independent 24-hour hand being the latest (allows you to track 3 time zones).
For me, a quickset date feature was more important than an independent hour hand (the tradeoff). Also, I wanted a sapphire crystal. Finally, I ALWAYS buy a complete set (box, papers) when buying used watches, but that's just me. I decided on the 16700, which had all of these features that I wanted, but was old enough to have patina on the hour markers and rare enough to appreciate. My second choice would have been a 16710. I appreciate the 1675 very much, but it's too old and fragile for me as a daily wearer. Also, prices are high and complete sets almost non-existent. When researching the various GMTs, their features, what colors, etc. This page proved to be a valuable resource: GMT Master History Dot Com (sorry - can't actually post the link) What price we're willing to pay, what condition we are willing to accept, and what features we need in a watch that we plan to wear some part of the time (or never) is a personal decision. Good luck and have fun finding your Pepsi! |

16700 is a great competitor for the 16710, though prices for both seem to be rising!
