Turmeric

In a world where most of the benefit promises of supplements tend to fade with time and actual research, turmeric appears to be bucking that trend. Seems there's an ever-growing body of good results associated with it. I've been taking it for about a decade now, mostly for its reputation as an anti-inflammatory, and so far, have avoided any of the negative side-effects that can come with it. But here's my question: How much should I be taking, and how often?

The info I've read is all over the place. I've seen anywhere from 500 mg to upwards of 2000 mg a day, as well as suggestions saying once a day, to several times a day.

Currently, I take a rather conservative amount, 500 mg once a day, double or triple that when my sciatica flares up, but I'm worried I may be missing out on some benefits by not taking more on a daily basis. I feel pretty good about the quality and make-up the product I use, but the dosage level itself, has me wondering. If any of you have experience, or better yet, some real expertise with turmeric, please chime in. I'd very much appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
Paul

You realize it is a food. Buy some at the grocery store and put it in your food, or a smoothie.

As for your sciatica, have you researched whether your sciatic nerve is not just being compressed by the piriformis muscle. If it is this exercise can fix it in a few days.

Girlfriend gets turmeric powder from some online source then mixes it with black pepper to increase its "bioavailability" I am told. We then use aprox 1 tsp in a blueberry shake every morning. I feel like the only physical difference is perhaps less soreness after the gym.

It’s in Indian (Asia) food, too, along with coriander, cumin, etc. I understand that men from India have a lower prostate cancer incidence. Curry ingredients?

Agree it can be a bit hit and miss with overly marketed supplements.

That said, the power of plant remedies can’t be understated - look at some of the most useful & powerful drugs which come from plants in either their natural or purified forms.

The benefits of some foods over others is also clear too - fish and some vegetables being high up the list of good for you choices.

A good balanced diet should be all most people need though !

You can take a higher dose regularly if you want since it is very safe especially compared to NSAIDS. Taking a good quality fish oil with a high percent of omega 3's will help inflammation also as well as many other benefits it has. You are smart to seek out natural remedies for ailments.

My local Whole Foods carries fresh Turmeric, I've done everything I can think of to try and add it to my diet but it's god awful!! Has an acrid dirt/acid like flavor. basically ruins any smoothy I put it in or any stir-fry I make and wrecks any dish/veg I mix into. I hate the stuff. May look into the supplements.

I would think it would be used for teeth yellowing.

I put a little in my smoothie 5-6x/week.

We use it juice every morning.

Sciatica flare ups is usually caused from misalignment. No supplement can fix that.

I've seen a few 'food fads' come and go in my lifetime, all without any unequivocal scientific evidence to support their general efficacy.
I have always been of the belief that a balanced diet provides all the nutrients the body needs in the absence of specific diagnosed medical conditions that require special treatment.
Dietary supplements are a massive industry and a license to print money for the producers. I would want to be very sure that they were successfully addressing a health issue before I sent my hard-earned money in that direction.

Curcumin is another good one. I have been told you need a binder for them for digestion. Pepper is a good one. https://nutritionfacts.org/2015/02/0...-blood-levels/

I take 1000Mg twice a day along with bunch of other supplements for arthritis pain and its helping a lot. Find a natural medicine doctor in your area and he might suggest other supplements for your condition. You can also try CBD oil its known to help with all kinds of issues.

What I've been using has about a 2/1 ratio of Turmeric/Curcumin and does include the black pepper. It also has some small amounts of ginger, green tea and a few other anti-inflammatory herbs.

Beats the heck out of ibuprofen, at least for me.

That will work. Without the pepper the turmeric/curcumin won't absorb into your body fully.

Odd but shortly after looking at this thread someone told me Turmeric would be good for my arthritis. She knew nothing about the pills but used the spice and mixed it with her coffee. As it turns out when speaking with my wife my mother in-law takes the pills. Anyway I purchased some 500 MG pills and will give it a go. If it helps it was well worth the $15.00 I paid for two bottles of 30 pills. May look online if I can find a better bargain if I choose to use it long term.

I use tumeric as a face mask. It yellows, not whitens.

The pill version isn't bad, they issue is the amount of turmeric in the pill. Most companies dont' put much in it they add other things instead. So we stick with fresh turmeric from the grocery.

Just a heads up straight turmeric taste like dirt, so add it something like tea, orange juice, coconut oil etc.

best bioavail method of getting turmeric benefits:

https://www.lifeextension.com/vitami...r-bio-curcumin

if you decide to ingest fresh turmeric, then combine w/ black pepper as the peperino compound increases bio-availability by massive %age.

edit: a ketogenic diet will also greatly help. you don't have to be in true ketosis, but cutting out most carbs and sugars (fruits and sweets) will hugely help.

Absorption

Yes, black pepper can enhance turmeric absorption. Some supplement forms that use a hydro-soluble technology can provide a superior absorption compared to these other forms. As mentioned by the previous poster, it is better to look for a supplement brand that does not use a lot of fillers and focuses on better absorption of the product.
