German engineered cars are the best in the world. Porsche are amongst the best German cars or at least as good as the best Mercedes (I think better than). They say 60% of all Porsches ever built are still out there. You cannot say that about any other German car. They are built to last a lifetime. Others are not, they are built to break and be disposable after 10yrs/120,000 miles. Heck, most modern cars break and are for the bin anytime soon after the manufactures warranty runs out, usually about 6yrs they are all fu**ed in some way.

You can jump into modern 911 (I reference modern being up to 22yrs old (996 onwards)) and drive it across Europe then when you get home, you could go do it again. Try that in an aged Ferrari or similar exotica..

Porsche is great. Rolex is great too.

My thoughts at least.

Bentley, Rolls Royce, Bugatti Royale, Bugatti Veyron?

Iconic , timeless, and filled with rich history and passion. With some hard work both are attainable for many.

Porsches are fine. Porsche Design make their own watches. Conveniently forgotten about here.

They are really nothing like Rolex.

Asking to buy a Porsche 911 GT3 new at list price gets exactly the same response (laughter) as asking for a SS Daytona in a Rolex AD...

At one time you could say the same about an Audi S4.

You also had GT3s lighting themselves on fire, and owners being ordered to park them.

Now that’s quality engineering.

I’d like to see Rolexes start lighting themselves on fire. Then we’d all be in agreement

Are they actually 'better' though? What is the service schedule on your Bugatti's and how much will that cost.. are the bushes and suspension components more durable on your big heavy Bentley or will they need replaced in half the distance travelled of a 911's? Does your Rolls cross the country as quickly as the Porsche, can you tear up the B roads in any of those above?

What do you constitute as better?

For me the combination of the quality of build, the way it can be used (and abused!) time and again without any worry, you can use it for touring across Europe or some fun on a track day, combined with the reliability and low running costs (24month service schedules) all make the Porsche a great candidate and daily use tool.

Quite. That was kind of my original point. Rolex are great because they’re a good all rounder, reliable, loved and mostly affordable compared to say something a lot finer, more expensive and costly to maintain.

Therefore Porsche and Rolex both occupy the same sweet spot.

911 and Submariner, both evolution not revolution. Both classics.

I would compare Audemars/Patek and Ferrari. Breaks easily, cannot be used in variety of daily activities due to low level quality, looks very good, hard and expensive to service.

Bentley is owned by Volkswagen and is based on the VW Phaeton/Touraeg/Porsche Panamera base

Rolls Royce is owned by BMW and has mostly BMW parts in the engineering part

Bugatti is owned by Volkswagen and gets a lot of tech aid by the mother company

And before you mention Aston Martin - they have been heavily depending on Ford parts in the past and now on AMG.

The history and lineage of just the Porsche 911 is unmatched. What other singular sports car model has done so much in racing alone?? Clue: there isn’t one. The professional automotive world calls the 911 “the legend” and “the standard” for a reason. Another fun fact, the 911 is also the most recognizable automotive design in the world. The Porsche 911’s appeal is from its history and real achievements, not snob appeal from manufactures inflated prices or limited availability.

You never hear of anyone growing up with a poster of a Camry on their walls. I had Porsche and Lamborghini posters on my walls as a kid. Now I have my 2004 GT3 in Guards red in the garage. I love it. This past Dec, I was fortunate to tour the Factory in Stuttgart and saw 911 being crafted. As a lifelong Porsche fan, it was a tremendous experience. There is no substitute.

IWC had quite a link previously, having designed the watch and font around the dials from the car (from memory)

See one link I found?

Gone now but I bought my 991 Carrera 7MT new in 2012 and in four years put over 62K miles on it. I was the hero of my dealer service department for being the guy who actually drove his car. Just like my Rolex watches I know Porsche sports cars (also had a Cayman) are robust and do not need to be babied. Many happy days in that car, a Boxster will be on my short list when I retire for a second car.

Iconic, good design, rugged, versatile and they retain value. There is no better ALL AROUND watch or car at any price.
