Rolex Armed Robbery

Unfortunately another instance where someone was targeted for their Rolex. Kindly take necessary precaution when visiting South Africa as this was in one of the affluent areas that tourists usually frequent.

Wow the guy in the white car sees a bunch of masked men approaching and he just sits there while they break his windows.

Visited and traveled around south africa two years ago, amazing country. I had no issues wearing a sub and met many people wearing Rolexes. I really hope SA can get proper control of these gangs

Not safe to be out and about even without Rolex. I was driving around in Joburg and sometimes when stopping in red light there would be zombie like people trying to open the car doors, scary.

This is happening all over the place, there was an article in Swedish largest business paper this week describing how several people had been robbed of watches and more in the wealthy part of Stockholm. People even go so far so they wear trash clothes when going to work and change to suit at the office, not to draw any attention from robbers. Pretty sad development there too.

London is a very safe place. I've been using public transport (underground, bus) in London for over 30 years when I visit on work or holiday and nothing happened, and I do feel safe in London. I sometimes ride the bus between 1:00 and 3:00 am. Although only zone 1,2

People talking like all of South Africa is dangerous. Would this be different if it wasn't a Rolex the victim was robbed of?
Robberies are nothing new. But people make it seem like these countries should be avoided.

Hell, to be honest, I feel safer when am outside North America...Not kidding.
One has to be cautious regardless of where you are. Crime cannot be avoided 100%.
Just be cautious and conscious when you are in familiar and unfamiliar territory and act accordingly.

The rest is up to the universe. You cannot avoid everything in life no matter how much you try.

I stayed at the Sandton Sun Hotel a little while back. I hired a local man from Diepsloot to show me around. He wasn’t going to put me in danger and I had a great day - met his family in his township, went to Hillbrow etc. And yep I wore my BLRO albeit under a long sleeve shirt. The intersections have Police cars stationed there at peak times, especially near the railway. Somebody here went on a bender about “why do you foreigners visit these places”. Life is pretty sterile in the Sandton shopping centre after traveling all that way.

Saw plenty of billboards advertising razor wire. Interesting.

There is/was a so called "Rolex gang"in South Africa...they caught some of them recently, but I hear more and more stories of watches getting taken there. I am South African, and I always used to wear mine around, but now I would be extra cautious.

Fourways is not that far from where this one happened.

Then, there was this one recently,

I think taking the name of the country or city out of the conversation can yield the most useful warning such incidents offer us.

If you are in an urban area you have a greater chance of encountering someone bent on theft. If it isn’t your Rolex, it might be your smartphone, or your wallet/purse. In many places the economy has slowed and unemployment rises - or there is an element that chooses to lead a criminal/gang lifestyle.

Situational awareness can help a lot - the vast majority of people we meet anywhere are actually honest...
But until the root cause is eliminated we stand a small risk of losing a Rolex.

This is the exact reason I told my wife a number of years ago that I had to have a lot more than one watch.

You just might lose a few.

Well, I have. I was born, bred, and grew up there. Fortunately, I now only work there.

So. I think that means I’m able to make this sort of comment. But, aside from that, it’s what we call here, in the UK, tongue-in-cheek.

Evidently. You don’t understand that. But thanks for your input.

Robberies of watches take place almost daily in London. You only hear of the stabbings when you resist. The rest goes under the radar and doesn't hit headline news.

As recent as yesterday one gang just robbed a shisha cafe in London. Armed police is stationed almost across the street at the Saudi Embassy... The robbers got away with it.

Happened to me a few times over the years (general personally being robbed, so watch, another time money, another time the car and money....). Sure the first time is jolting, yet by the third+ times it gets a bit anti-climatic.

Generally speaking, 100% agree. Plus unlike Europe, USA and other countries where the odds favor the robbers, in Singapore they have a higher chance of being caught and properly prosecuted.

There is definite uptick in Rolex theft. One can minimize the point by stating everything (purses, wallets, cash) is and has always been in play but I doubt that Rolex thefts are down over the previous 5 years or so. It's absolutely a trend that will continue based on current values.
