It's a very personal decision for sure. One that I myself torture with time to time but I'd have to do some serious consolidating to get there... And I'm not sure if I would do this to my collection..... I know quality over quantity.... But dang.....Hard decision.

Thanks all for the comments, certainly something to think about. As I’m really torn on this, I’m probably too lazy to make it happen, but if I happen to chat to a grey dealer at some point and they’re open to a swap deal, I would find it hard to resist...

Will keep you all posted, and in the meantime, try to think about which watch(es) to wear this weekend!

Patek 5270P messing with my head...

Yep, tried it on and it’s fine. I have a flat wrist which helps. Don’t be too fooled by the 15450, it wears bigger than people think because of the lug design. The 5270P wears similar on me to my 5990 which I think works well.

The 5270p is clearly a great watch, but so is the 5990. If you have to sell the 5990 to make it happen then I wouldn’t do it. If you can keep the 5990 and one Rolex, but sell the rest towards the 5270 I’d go for it.

It is the 5990 that is the main stumbling block, whilst it would also be the main enabler!! Might just have to save and accept the fact that Grails are supposed to be long term goals!

5990, 5270p. That would be a perfect minimalist combo. If it's in the cards.

Keep the G-shock too.

How does the 5990 thickness compare to the 5270P? It is definitely one of the thicker Nautilus models. I am considering it but afraid it might be overly thick compared to the 5270P.

You'll probably notice the weight difference more than the thickness.

Firstly, I know that Chrono24 values are inflated and as such this is not an exact science, but broadly speaking if I assume I would pay the asking price of a 5270P on Chrono24, it is reasonable to apply the logic that I would sell at the selling prices on Chrono24 – neither is true, but both should be equally incorrect!

My current collection is:

Patek Nautilus 5990
Audemars Piguet 15450 Blue Dial
Audemars Piguet Offshore
Rolex Daytona 116519 LN
Rolex GMT 126710 BLRO
Rolex Sea Dweller 116600
Jaeger LeCoutre Reverso GMT
Omega Speedmaster Reduced
TAG Microtimer

Based on some fag-packet maths (with some rounding)…this collection could be transformed into…

Patek Philippe 5270P
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15450 Blue
Rolex Sea Dweller 116600
Omega Speedmaster Reduced
TAG Microtimer

If I’m being honest, this is probably too much of a leap for me as I’m just not sure I can say goodbye to the Daytona or the Nautilus. But…if it were you…would you??
I would keep the SD4K, BLRO and 5990. All others I'd part with.

I did this not too long ago. Been rotating the 5270p and the RG Dato for work during the week and then RMs all weekend!

I want a 5990 back though!

Seriously, I don’t. I enjoyed the 5980 a great deal, but I love the 5270P the same amount if not more. At the same time, I have a two-piece collection of PP that I feel very content with: 5270P+5960/1A-010.

Once a while, I run into someone wearing a Nautilus. That does remind me of my 5980, but I never had a thought of regret.

an important question here is : do we feel comfortable with tying that amount of money on one single piece ? once you pass by that , the rest is easy

Good point. I’m over that barrier though. The real barrier is that whilst I would do it in a heartbeat if someone knocked on my door and offered me the trade, I don’t have the time, patience, or quite enough desire to spend weeks and months dealing to make it happen. So for now, it remains a dream!

I hear you , you would need a grey dealer that’s has the 5270P and that wants to trade on fair terms

Exactly. My original thought was that my collection is likely a lot easier to shift than a 5270 and as such, a grey might be prepared to do a no profit deal to give them more sellable stock, but having given it some thought, that’s not the way they work in all reality.
