I have been armed mugged in my pousada 2005 in Brasil (Fortaleza).
Fortunately i was wearing a swatch irony at that time.
For me it remains a terrible experience.

Mugged , not really . But my SS Daytona was taken from my house by the girlfriend of our "dog sitter" and son of a good friend of mine . Nasty experience ! Worst is that we just paid over 300 US last week when we had to leave the dogs at a good kennel now we no longer have the dog sitter . Ironic , no ?

All in to Brazil and then get robbed, glad you didn't have a Rolex on at the time.
I'm going to Surinam for 6 weeks this year, I'm thinking of buying a 50 euro Casio.

Hi Jack,
I wore years before that time some fine timepieces in Brasil.
As said, lucky me, at that time the swatch.

Indeed for Surinam i would wear a cheap one.
Buy one cheap taxfree at Schiphol airport before you leave.
Have a nice sunday Jack,

2 months ago i had my rolex sub ripped off my wrist by a thug in Buenos Aires. We wrestled for a few minutes before the band broke, ripping up my wrist. Definitely a traumatic experience.

I've been armed mugged in Sao Paulo,Brazil. Someone saw me wearing my Submariner in a Restaurant and even I put it on my pocket when I left the place, 2 guys on a motorcycle followed me and pointed a gun asking for my watch. Actually, Im from Rio de Janeiro where everyone say these things happens often but I've never been mugged here .However, in Sao Paulo there is a Rolex Mafia. When you arrive at the airport some people see you wearing one and tell others to follow you..etc.. thats soo sad, but it really happens there.
Poor me. ;(

One time, these three kids tried to mug my Submariner with a knife. But, ole Subbie don't take no crap (not to mention he's harder than most knife blades), and he smacked one of them upside the head real quick. Then he loosed the diver's extension and wrapped himself around the neck of another one, clamping down with the fliplock clasp and choking him out. The third guy just ran off.

It's a cool story, but you really have to hear my Sub tell it to get the full effect.

That is really crazy, though it's apparently not exclusive to Brazil. I don't have first-hand accounts to report, but I have heard of the same thing happening in parts of Asia.

I have never been mugged as a result of my Rollie. But years ago my house was broken into, and among the stolen was a 70s Tudor oyster prince my dad handed down to me.

Only my very old Seiko Kinetics Series back in the university days, when my house got broken into.

They left my passport but went for a watch that costed only US$600 or there about, and I heard passports sell better in the underground market, but hey, I dunno there must have been something that made the guy steal the watch over a passport.

Yep, my dad gave me a SS midsize datejust (or date, can't remember) when I turned 15 and a couple of years later I was mugged along with a friend of mine (he was wearing a GMT Pepsi).

I would definately leave it home. A young friend of mine just returned from Europe minus his camera and Blackberry. Taken while he was sleeping on a train. That is what I would do for sure. Tough times out there.

I was mugged in New Orleans once, well, more than once, but this particular time, the thugs, no less than ten, took my wallet, my shoes and socks, my class ring, and my shirt. They left my Casio Data Bank on my wrist.

There's a lesson there somewhere.

I learned a lot from the experience.

same thing happened to my dad in buenos aires, two thugs in a motorcycle approached him and tried to wrestle a dj i gave him for his birthday of his arm, lucky for him, and i kid you not, he always travels with his bodyguard and a few kung fu moves later they where crawling back to their bike jejejej, anyways, after that my dad travels with a vintage chopard mille miglia that fly's well under the radar. oh and he got mugged of a 18k yg croc strap bvlgari bvlgari, while he was in the can in a japanese restaurant in Caracas, Venezuela, they literrally kicked in the door while he was in the can, put a gun to him and asked for his watch.

Thankfully, No, but I've been thinking about what I would do if that were to occur. Like Snow Rocks, my YG DJ with Jubilee band has a carry permit, but . . .

If you're backpacking and can't be sure of your itinerary's security, I would suggest you wear a beater you wouldn't mind losing. It would be tough missing out on the tourist-experience just because your watch made you paranoid.

Enjoy the vacation and leave your Rolex at home.

If it makes you nervous buy a cheap plastic casio. Thats what i would do if im going trekking and staying in cheapy/rougher places etc

Generally i have very very good insurance so if i was mugged, my insurance claim would be filed 2 seconds after the police report. Of course it doesnt compensate you if you lose a watch that has sentimental value like my sub.
