Difference between the 16800 and 16610?

I'm looking at both these units, both pre-owned.

Any major differences in either?

The Sub 16800 uses Steel 316L, and the 16610 uses 904L with is more corrosion-resistant but also has a higher Nickel content.

The 16800's were the first Subs to get the sapphire crystal (making them water proof to 1,000 ft. for the first time for the Sub range), and it also introduced the rapid date change feature with the 3035 movt. First 16800's had matte dials, without WG trim of the markers. Later, around 1985, the glossy dials with WG trimmed markers came. Some of the glossy dials had a defect in the paint mixture, making for small cracks in the dial, popularly known as the "spider web" dials.

After the 16800 came the 168000 that marked the change from use of steel 316L to the use of steel 904L, btw., and was only produced about 9 months.

The 16610 came in 1989 and uses the 3135 movt., and resembles the 16800 glossy dial Sub Date much in appearance, but whereas all 16800's had Tritium dials, the 16610's only had Tritium markers and hands up to around year 1998 where Luminova took over. In 2000, Luminova was changed to SuperLuminova.

There are 27 jewels in the 3035 movements found in the 16800 and 168000 and 31 in the 3135 of the 16610.

Well, mathematically and technically speaking, this is a perfectly true statement.

Would be great if Mike tuned in with some of his fantastic pics. He can probably also add further info about the difference.

If the 16800 you're looking at has the matt trit. dial, that's the one I would go for. If it has the gloss WG surround dial the 16610 might be the better choice.
If luminosity is a factor, a luminova 16610 is the only choice,

16800 matt,

16610,
