Wow. Scenarios like this make it very hard to trust anyone these days. A few years back, no one ever would have doubted Steve's integrity. Crazy...

So much for the often over used quote buy the seller not the watch. I'll trust my instincts long before I do anything else. D the due dilligence is the only answer, anything else is just foolish.

Really, sorry to see that one bad apple puts everyone on that tree for you. Steve was always on the edge, he finally crossed over it for good.

Steve was never a trusted seller as far as I can tell.
He built a fan base no doubt but all the serious collectors I can think of wouldn't throw him a dime. |

1 of his final posts here read as the tirade of a madman, completely nonsensical.
It seemed as though he was deeply disturbed....who knows, maybe a breakdown of some sort?

I bought stuff from him... I'm glad I got mine before his breakdown.
It's a shame it has gone to this.

So far I have bought 3 watches from individuals, but everytime I gave them a meeting in Rolex and Panerai shops to authenticate the watch, even if I had to go 400 miles, 2 times when I found a nice watch and the owner still had it and was ok to meet, the second I mentioned in my email that we would go to the shop, no more news, not a word, so just saying that you will go with him to the shop, even if you won't because you live too far is a good hint...

Me too but I was always skeptical of the junk he had for sale.

Exactly Paul--never would have bought a watch from him and for quite obvious reasons.

Purchased my snowflake from Steve some years ago. He was more of a broker as he found it at a Miami watch show and sold it to me immediately the same day. So he didn't have it in his inventory.
Steve would regularly start FS threads selling vintage watches detailing options such as plex crystals with or without cyclops, this dial or that, as well as other variations. Made me wonder who often he stole from Peter to pay Paul. Knowing that vintage enthusiasts pine for originality it seems strange he was showing photos of various parts you could choose from. Very sad conclusion to his story and sorry so many got burned. dP

Hi everyone. I read this news about Steve. Sad story, I remember his posts, but never bought anything from him. Glad I didn't.

The only thing I dislike about this thread is that so many people were of the opinion that Steve is one of the world's top ten Rolex experts and suddenly they all had doubts about him from the beginning. By the way I also had my doubts and never bought anything from him.

That is unfortunate. I remember Steve and didn't remember seeing any red flags (although I didn't buy anything, and didn't see the last posts). Thanks for sharing this information. From the dates on the other website, it looks as if this fairly recently arose.

I only had one deal with him for a vintage bracelet for the old Tudor Date Day Jumbo. he had two for sale and I paid more for the better condition one, yet was shipped the one with the in poor condition. He offered to swap, blaming it on his "secretary" shipping the wrong one, but based on the marginal reviews I had been reading, asked for a refund instead, which he did.
