14K or 18K Rolex Date question

I see an occasional all-gold Rolex Date for sale and often the seller describes it as 14K.

Did they make the Rolex date in 14K ??? I can't find a good reference to tell either way.

Thanks.

Yes most almost all were 14k if older models, new ones are 18k.

The switch to 18k stared in 1983 and was complete by mid-80's.

If you're ever unsure, have a look at the clasp code it will show a letter after the code followed by 14 or 18.

Great information, thank you! Is there a way to identify 14k vs. 18k on TT? Did the change happen around the same time?

Thank you. I only have 18k but I have looked at older ones and always wondered why they were 14k.

I think the 14kt vs 18kt in TT is more for watches sold in the US than date wise. however it did seem to end around the same time.

Yes David you have been a good source in the Rolex Ref Library. He has explained it well in that thread.

BTW in US the TT bracelets are ones with the 14 or 18 appended after clasp code.

yep, always exceptions, also a RARE 9K exists, but by far most common is 14k
