GMT 6542 hands.....

Does anybody know details about 6542 hands ??

As far as I know, the early 6542 versions had a big bubble white second hand, a long minute hand, that reaches the chapterring and a long small GMT hand that exceeds the chapterring.

Is this right ?

Like the ones on this photo:










The later or service hands had a shorter minute and small GMT hand and a second hand with no big bubble.

The later 6542 did have slightly different Mercedes hands than the earliest batch of watches, mostly seen with the non-white second hand. Your second photo could be original hands as there were lots of small changes taking place back then. The earliest examples also could have a "long neck" hour hand as seen below.

Hard to say with absolute certainty, but I have seen many of the later 6542 with the shorter minute and 24 hour hands and the non-white painted second hand. The earlier 6542 mostly are seen with the larger painted white second hand and the longer main hands.

There's a couple of different setups for the 6542. The rare long hour hand on the very first versions followed by more standard looking sets in both ss and gilt. The minute hand can differ between a very pointy version to a more chubby one. Also the seconds hand could match the others in steel/gilt or it could be white. Usually with a normal look but sometimes also with the bigger lollipop.

The fastest tell to see if hands are changed on chapter rng watches is to see if the minute hand reaches the chapter ring. Service hands almost always don't and I feel certain to say that short minute hand never came like that from the factory. Those hands are from service and from a time after Rolex stopped using chapter ring dials.

Is it possible that the GMT hand was the bigger hand often seen with the 1675 and later versions or would that make it not period correct.
